Small improvements to @mentions
Here's some things I wish were slightly different with @mentions... Not urgent, but would make for a much nicer experience.
It should display their user name, not their @mention ID
When you click an @mention in a comment, it should link to that user's profile (right now it seems to do nothing)
Often times when I go to use @mentions, the list of names pops up in a random part of the screen and I have to chase it around. No idea why but seems like a bug.
It would be cool if there were a "reply" link under each comment, and all it did was jump you to the comment box and automatically put in @mention to the person who wrote the comment you want to reply to.
It should display their user name, not their @mention ID
Do you mean after you've selected a user?
Reply link is in 1.0 system and might be back ported to loomio beta.
I mean when I mention @benjaminknightloom it should say "Ben Knight" not that long ID thingy.
I like how it works with Facebook. You start typing @name and then the full name shows up.. then you can backspace the last and middle names to only have the first name linked.
When typing, lookups for both the @ ID and the user's name should be supported, but the person's actual name should be displayed. If there are multiple options that pop up for a given name (John Smith), it might be helpful for user icons to be included in the suggestion dropdown.
Oh, and regarding multiple people with the same name on the same thread, the fact that the name links to a profile solves the differentiation problem.
Oh! And hovercards with image, profile info, group intro etc would be totally rad too!
@lyrecalliope that's a really great feature-complete description of my ideal @mention system :)
Really enjoying your contributions to this community @lyrecalliope! Much appreciated!
@hannahsalmon Thank you! Though you should know, if I can get some of my communities to formally adopt Loomio, you ain't seen nothin'. ;)
I'll come back here when I want to collect the feature requirements for the mentions overhaul. Thanks everyone.
@robertguthrie In that case in another thread somewhere (ill edit this post and put in a link to it when i see it later) someone mentioned the idea of being able to "@" groups.
Like @wellington or @commsteam etc.
So yeah, if we could add broader tagging functionality to "@" mentions that would also be great!
rory like the thinking.. it gets a bit more complicated at that level but we're working on inter group discussions
an idea:
why not tagging also discussions? for example: @loomiodesignbanner (doesn't exist but it would be great)
i see an error that i think it should be fixed.
When i press @ i can put english names but when the name is in Greek Language i can't mention like @χρήστος but i must find what number is to mention, like @13.
I sometimes find myself confused by thread where a user's @name is quite different from the name that displays next to their comments. These proposals by @alanna would address this, as would putting the @name in brackets next to the display next to comments. So if I changed my display name to "Danyl Strype", my comments would start with:
[avatar] Danyl Strype (@strypey)
One other little nuisance thing about @mentions, they seem to get broken if I put punctuation after them. If my comment says "thanks for this info @user, I'll follow up by email", the @mention functions don't work. I usually hack around this by leaving a space between the @mention and the punctuation. But I suspect this takes new users quite a while to notice, and until they figure it out, reduces the usefulness of the @mentions functions.
EDIT: no idea why there are [] around the instances of @mentions but not @mention
Further broken behaviour with \@mentions . . . when inserted while doing an edit of a comment I have noticed that they haven't displayed with the blue link-highlight. I've no idea whether they were in fact linked or not, or whether they alerted the mentioned person. \@mentions in the original comment displayed correctly.
Thanks for the feedback. We'll take it onboard and improve it when we can.
I often run into wanting to tag/@mention someone who is on our custom Loomio instance called Borderland Talk but not a member of the particular subgroup the discussion is taking place in. Why aren't mentions global for the whole server/instance? This would make the system much more dynamic and easier to work with. Instead of manually inviting someone to a group and contacting them through another platform to make them aware of a discussion.
I'm aware of the recent "inviting someone into a thread" functionality but the @mention is so quick and fundamentally ingrained in everyone from Facebook and Slack usage. It would be really helpful if it wouldn't be limited to only the actual subgroup. If that poses a problem on large servers with a shitload of users then you can always make it optional to activate global mentioning for that particular group I guess?
Good idea!
Until we recently added thread level membership we were unable to provide mentioning to people not in the group, as they would not have access to participate.
Now we can add people to the thread or poll when they are mentioned, so they have access when they're not part of the group and allow you to mention anyone from any of your groups.
Edited with updated plan
Yes please. This feature would really make things much more dynamic and improve flow immensely.
Work is mostly finished on this. Should have it deployed in the next few days.
