Drug addiction (Alcohol is a drug) 200 000 Kiwis are dependent

DN David Newcombe Public Seen by 131

Professor Doug Selman, of the national addiction centre findings , 200k are dependent on alcohol alone , addiction and recovery is years behind other countries , ( USA 23 million in long term recovery) Google "the anonymous people" watch trailer, NZ DHBs are mainly funded CHRISTIAN REHABS , what has Jesus Christ got to do with ADDICTION ? The rehabs are getting no results !! Less than 300 people long term sober with around 400 million dollars given too them in the last 10 years , this must stop , it is offensive to millions of New Zealanders to have too go to a house of Jesus Christ ,for gambling and other addictions, Public image is also stopping many kiwis from getting help , they think they are "Not that Bad" because they are not homeless, i have 28 yrs in this field in NZ and know the true figures, human rights laws are been broken , people are been made to go to church or be kicked out of tax payer funded rehabs , its a 7 week wait in Auckland for medical detox , getting off alcohol can kill, medical detox is a must .I propose that all tax payer funding to organized religious groups under health care stop, and only non religious groups get taxpayer funding for healthcare

@reidalexanderwicks
Then how do you legislate a change in culture?

fuck you assholes Wed 23 Jul 2014 9:12PM

@marcwhinery You can't.

I mean, you can try and influence a change via ads and classes in schools, but it will be a slow change.

We are talking about addiction , That kills around 4000 New Zealanders per year, NOT HEAVY drinkers , 85% of kiwis don't have a problem, most of us know someone who is addicted, We must change the way we treat this illness, I've got two Facebook group's, Recovery road adventure ( encouraging healthy living , 8600 members, ) and REHAB WATCH NEW ZEALAND, 720 members,

@marcwhinery Great line btw! I favour putting coconut water in bars as a non alcoholic drink that tastes good and is good for you. Binge drinking remains a huge problem and if it can't be curbed what hope do the alcoholics have except JC? If only we could all find the strength inside of us. Decriminalising if not legalizing cannabis for over 21s might be preferable to over indulgence in alcohol. Is there not a medication that will prevent people drinking alcohol similar to smoking tobacco? Replace the dependance with a pleasurable alternative... coconut water is good :)

@jamesabbott Gah, you have no idea what you're talking about! Coconut water is awful!

@reidalexanderwicks Maybe they could flavour it, but if I have to drink something in a bar (because everyone else seems to and I feel wrong if I don't) it beats treated tap water or even mineral water as a refreshment, and contains less sugar and acid than juice and soft drinks. I'll admit it's an acquired taste, but the effect is kinda like supercharging ur brain, in sufficient quantities of a litre or more (it's full of potassium and someone told me close to what we need for our blood plasma)

@jamesabbott I'm more of a fan of just replacing the alcohol in cocktails with ginger beer or something. That way everybody's drinking the same stuff, and the people who aren't drinking don't sigh and go "Orange juice again?"

@reidalexanderwicks Yes! Mathematically drinking too much orange juice will piss off the staff who need to supply it, and too much pop, well that lines the companies pockets and hurts our health. Your solutions needs a name and a campaign: "alfresco". Eg One martini alfresco. Whatever it is must be clear (suggest coconut water). There are non-alcoholic cocktails, but this might make them "cool".

The use of alcohol as a mass sedative has it roots in the industrial era when whole communites where planned around a pub, a church, and a factory. The reason we drink the way we do, have a deeper hisotory that just beer barons and advertising. For me the real question is "why do we seek to add chemical enhancement into our lives in order to expereince pleasure?" This is not Human Nature, but something very unnatural indeed.
