I suggested three, 8 eight hour shifts a day for several reasons. In the absence of rangers (we have the paddock pirates now, but what they will do is yet to be seen) so effectively our site manager is the only person on shift at any time to deal with anything that happens. I therefore think that this needs to be an active role and the site manager needs to be awake, alert and wondering around site. They should have some form of transport (ie Bike or even a golf cart? http://bit.ly/ODx5hR).

People are more likely (in my opinion) volunteer for an 8 hour shift, it means you can do other stuff before/after your shift, having 12 hour shift pretty much writes a day off. It does increase the amount of people needed to fill the roster, but I also think that we will more people willing to do shifts, ever though we should be pretty picky about who we let do Site Manager shifts.

There is only a handful of people who can do these shifts anyway... Could we do a mixture of both?

I think having a mixtures of both would just make things messy. I'm not too concerned if they are 8 or 12 hours long but feel that it really does need to be an active role and isn't really something that can be done while sleeping, anyone else have thoughts on that?
