Pirates respect women! Some time back the kiwi Pirates had a discussion about how to improve the gender balance in our membership, and make the organisation more open and welcoming of new members from a diverse range of backgrounds. Being a sensitive topic, we chose to have that discussion in private. But the collection of amazing online talks we started to make there, by some of the prominent women in the commons movements, is well worth sharing publicly. We continue to expand it with talks on Pirate-related topics.

Possible Sources for More Talks

TED Talks and TEDx Talks, BigThink, the Chaos Computer Club has a large library of video-recorded conference talks, BlackGirlsCode, RailsGirls, LinuxChix, Women Learning to Code.

At the Procomuns conference almost half of the featured speakers were women. Last year's Platform Cooperativism conference in New York also had a high number of female speakers. 6 out of the 9 featured on the front page are women. The Conference 2015 in Malmö, Sweden, also features a large number of women speakers. WebVisions is a web conference that happens in a number of cities around the US and Europe and there are a number of women speaking this year. The Challenge Power conference in Berlin, 11-12 March 2016, had a number of women speakers.

The Social Working Group at the WC3 has a number of women members, including Ann Bassetti, Wendy Seltzer, Jessica Tallon, and Amy Guy. I've already found a number of videos of Wendy Seltzer, but with a bit more searching the Ann, Jessica, and Amy may have talks online somewhere too.

The P2P Foundation are interviewing women active in the leadership of commons projects in their '100 Women of P2P' project.

Audrey Tang is a transgender women from Taiwan, prominent in the Perl community, and a speaker as the O'Reilley Open Source Convention in Amsterdam. I can't find any video of talks by her in English yet, or in her native language with subtitles, but she has a YouTube channel.

Lexi Alexander @lexialex is a movie director (eg 'Punisher: War Zone' 2008) with strong sympathy for Pirate ideas

Nixie Pixel: Her GNU/ Linux instruction videos and commentary on geek culture are legendary.

Shown here speaking at TEDxMasala, here are a couple of women of colour whose connection to our movement isn't obvious until you consider that creating GMOs so you can patent life forms is the food equivalent of the move to proprietary software, and needs to be resisted for the same reasons.
