Sidebar menu feedback

Recently, each time I load a group home page, the sidebar menu opens itself. It didn't use to do this. Is this bugging anyone else as it does me? I'm already fed up of putting the thing away to release screen real-estate.

Opening a group page is surely done because the user wants to be in that group, not in one of the others they belong to? That's half the functionality of the sidebar unwanted already. They'll already have received email notifications on threads they're following. That's most of the remaining functionality. Why would they want to open the sidebar as their first action when loading a group page?

I apologise for my irritated tone. If you use the sidebar LOTS, do please comment.

FWIW: In my own case (usually using Loomio on a 15" screen), I use the sidebar all the time to navigate between groups, and to flick back to 'Unread threads'. I'm in about 8 groups that I use daily.

In contrast, I'm only seriously into three groups, and find it handy to keep all of them open in tabs in my browser, so never use the sidebar for this purpose of switching. Thus unread threads is really the only sidebar functionality that I use much.I guess if I were handling twice the number of groups - and they were much busier - it could be clunky to do it this way.

I LOVE tabs! Always have five or six open in any app that provides them. Saves re-opening pages, facilitates cut&paste. But then, I'm a person who always wants to see the desktop and to drag&drop, almost never uses apps in full-screen and hates mobile operating systems where everything is sandboxed.Maybe I'm claustrophobic?

Oh, the damn sidebar menu just popped open again ;-)

What if there were a keyboard shortcut to toggle the sidebar, instead of having to journey to the far northwest to close it every time?

mike_hales

:) Aha! Suits me thanks. Although . . I'm trying to recruit a bunch of people to a Loomio group, who I'd guess are icon-clickers rather than shortcut users?

Pressing 'S' in the interface will now toggle the sidebar

Lovely! Kudos to the Loomio community.

I had a similar but opposite experience recently - I was annoyed because it wasn't showing. Seems like the easiest fix here is remembering if you like it open or not.
