Loomio

More indepth Sub-Group permissions

My company has a small group of experts who make the final decision on whether or not a database migration is safe to run in our production environment. The discussion about the migration is open to anyone, but the voting is restricted to only members of this small group of experts.

I think this sort of setup is pretty standard in many organizations (open discussion, but restricted voting), and would be beneficial to have the option for loomio sub-groups to have the option to work this way too.

This would be implemented as a second option underneath the current Allow all Loomio Community members to see this subgroup and its discussions option. The option would be something to the effect of Allow all members of to create discussions and proposals in this sub-group (but not vote on proposals). The wording needs cleaning up, and it might need to be split into two separate options, but I think you probably get the idea. This would apply to all types of groups (public, mostly private and hidden).

Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea! I've definitely heard similar suggestions from other users. @joshuavial wants per-discussion per-user settings I think.

I'm not 100% sure on the correct implementation - one way is subgroups, like you mentioned. Another could be similar to facebook's settings, something like "everyone, this group's users, subgroup members, or specific people" for different things like visibility, commenting, raising proposals, and stating positions.

Obviously that could get really complex really quickly, but I reckon if we made well thought out, easy to understand default options, with and "advanced" link to pretty much customize to your heart's content, it would empower a lot of different use cases.

Yeah, I think that would be a good way to do it, with an advanced link. It would probably need to be in both the group/sub-group (which controls the default privacy settings), and then also on the discussions, where the actual privacy settings are done.

I think this is an excellent idea. I am considering approaching a food coop in Ashland, Oregon (where I live) to use Loomio to organize it's membership into a body that can collaborate, propose, and vote on various issues. I imagine having this option would be a huge asset. That way exchanges could be followed by the larger community (non-members), yet the voting could be limited to members only. In my mind, this is would allow a window of openness in groups/organizations that still needed to some level of containment in their decision making. Great idea!

@scottlemmon @alanna The first thing that comes to mind for me is something along the lines of:

Group participation settings

Who can start discussions?

  • Anyone
  • Anyone in the organization
  • Members only

Who can comment on discussions?

  • Anyone
  • Anyone in the organization
  • Members only

Who can start proposals?

  • Anyone
  • Anyone in the organization
  • Members only

Who can vote on proposals?

  • Anyone
  • Anyone in the organization
  • Members only

But yeah, you definitely wouldn’t want all these options displayed to the user all the time… something like an “advanced” section makes sense for sure.

@jonlemmon "But yeah, you definitely wouldn’t want all these options displayed to the user all the time".
Wouldn't these options just be displayed once when a group is initially set up...and only to the person setting up the group? I like your suggestion and think it's fine as is.
