Banned List

JS Jenny Scattergood Public Seen by 137

So I was thinking there are quite a few items in the co-op that we might all agree shouldn't be there! So I'm suggesting that we make a banned list of items that can't be ordered into the co-op. So first of all I was thinking any items with unsustainable palm oil? Even if it says organic I don't think it is from sustainable sources...

I don't really see the point in it being a 'banned list'. It seems more that it's just a useful tool for logging previous research done into different things and, as Bryher said, it's ultimately a viewpoint that could change over time. Maybe a product will stop using whatever ingredient we've decided is ethically irresponsible (although this isn't very likely) and will be okay to stock it. Also when it comes to things like, as started in another discussion from Joel, packaging vs exploited workers, this becomes deciding the lesser of two evils and that's when things get murky. A banned list seems too black and white. So I agree with Marcel and say 'avoidance list' rather than 'banned list'. I hope the explanation is understood. Although I accept the proposal broadly I'd like it modified so, dramatically, I'm disagreeing with it. But that's because I don't know where the 'Agree broadly but want proposal modified' button is:)

If it's more like product research, we should also log the action taken alongside it, so that the research is acted upon not just sitting in a file

Just one more thing to add - there has been talk over the last few weeks about eventually creating a log that allows people to look up items we stock and will provide information about what it is, why we stocked it (health wise, ethically etc), I think there is actually a folder already that is the very beginnings of this idea. I'd maybe just have this 'products we have previously avoided' list as part of that log?

So what is happening differently from the outcome that came out of Loomio and why might this be...

I guess we need an info sheet hanging in the coop with our banned list and also our regular-items-list so that we don´t run out of anything?

Is there an ethical way to get Quinoa? I feel uneducated about Quinoa ethics :L
