Local Convention Date Change Closed Thu 3 Dec 2020 8:04PM

Given that:

  1. The currently scheduled date for the Local Convention (12.12.20) conflicts with both National Green New Deal action plans and potential plans to counter protest right wing elements in DC

  2. The currently scheduled date for the local convention does not provide enough time from proposal due date (12.4) to convention to allow for the three reader process

I motion that we move the Local Convention to 12.19.

Having considered Ryan’s points, I change my vote and recommend moving to Sunday instead if the convention must be moved.

Hit agree when it was sent, now going with abstain. 12/12 is my bday so I'll not be there if it's that day.

I am worried about changing the date. I think the confusion it will cause will hurt attendance, and I think the weekend of the 19th will have less turnout wither way since it will be the weekend before people get off from work for the holidays. I think Ryan has a point that the last minute change could be interpreted as bad faith by some, and it would be regrettable to lose Dr. Prashad.

I really don't agree that we need to move the convention in order to meet three reader. The bylaw proposal has absolutely met the bar since its been discussed at multiple steering meetings and special meetings. Any amendments to the bylaws would get grandfathered in because they are amendments to existing proposals, not new proposals themselves. I don't even know if we have any resolutions but if we do those would be the only ones that you could argue don't meet three reader (though it's debatable whether 3R even applies to conventions at all). For those we can just vote to make them emergency resolutions at the meeting on Tuesday and its no problem.

I really think moving the convention is a bad idea. It would seriously damage attendance, and if we aren't quorate then the convention can't do anything at all and its all a wash. I also think moving a convention a week before with little warning over a small rule in the bylaws could be interpreted as bad faith by some. There's also just no good alternative date, and we would almost certainly lose Dr. Prashad as our guest speaker.

I'm voting against this.

Ryan makes really good points that made me reconsider my vote. Ultimately, I am keeping my vote in the affirmative because there really is no "good" time for this local convention given current events. If we keep the date as is, we may have lower turn out because of the GND actions and people wanting to counter protest or be otherwise distracted. If we move it, we must be very direct in communicating with the chapter our reasoning so that members still feel compelled to attend in spite of a date change.
