Poll - How should Social Coop Handle Booking Photos?

Not to call out an individual, but this came up based on a reporter from newsie.social posts booking photos. The user does do the effort of investigating the crime and adding some context (so it's not a copy+paste from police website) but there's only so much you can do in a toot.

The answer of "don't follow this person" doesn't quite work since I do want to follow the reporter for local news.

My workplace has an account on Newsie Social. I'm willing to open a discussion with the site admin Jeff Brown if that seems like a helpful way forward. Several of my colleagues also have accounts on journa.host so I'm confident I could do the same with Adam Davidson, who runs that instance.

It would probably be good to start the discussion now, before some larger debate spirals out of control. At least seeing how this info is presented on reddit, it can cause social problems.

This must be a US thing? Pretty sure this sort of practice is illegal in the UK, or should be if not.

the practice of unofficially disseminating the photos?

this is information is considered property of the people under my government. The cost of NOT posting the booking info would probably be too high for police departments to ever consider not doing this.

Good question. There are a few ways (which we should probably document better, which is a common refrain lately 😅):

  • Start a thread on the Community working group's section of Loomio (https://www.loomio.com/socialcoop-community-working-group/), which is also linked in the description of our root Loomio page (https://www.loomio.com/socialcoop/).

  • Join one of their meetings (and you can see the times of upcoming meetings in that same Loomio area).

  • In a pinch, DM on Mastodon individual CWG members to ask for guidance (who they are is listed at the top of the Loomio area for the CWG).

Personally I would start a Loomio thread in the CWG area, because I like having the conversations in the open and starting asynchronous feels like a lower lift to me.
