Engagement of Initial Stewards

PG Philipp Grunewald Public Seen by 267

The Co-Lab has currently got no stewardship group. How do we go about changing this?

This is the proposal we are voting on:

This is a link to the current proposal. Let us discuss this a bit further to resolve the remaining issues and converge on ONE SINGLE approach and then I will create a proposal and deadline within Loomio

Philipp,
I commend and support your initiative to establish an interim group to expedite some key decisions we need to make.

I fear however that it may still be too abstract for people, as it is not clear what exactly they are signing up for.

Perhaps the next step is to call for people to consider the my recent post in Trello re the C&E plan proposal which suggests - vision (cause), mission, values, objectives and strategies to guide the proposed interim stewards onto the same (big picture) page? It would also be clearer if we have a brainstorm list of possible constellations linking to the growth trends we need to change.

This is the reason why Ian and I want to have a Skype meeting with you to consider what else we can do sell the plan concept / rationale to a wider audience. The unfortunate SPIN acronym may be a useful frame:

S - Situation (consider what the audience is grappling with)
P - Problem (the problems, difficulties, dissatisfaction that we need to overcome)
I - Implications (if the problem is not resolved)
N - Need pay-off (Benefits of the right solution)

The situation as I see it, could be:

  • Andrew (and others) maybe concerned with how his volunteer CoLab involvement is going to generate some income,
  • Andy maybe concerned to avoid criticism for wanting to control the movement globally.
  • Andy may also be concerned to contain the scope of the Colab (e.g. his reticence to engage allies at this stage)
  • Also Andy may be concerned to contain the scope of his PA involvement, as it has taken a lot of his effort todate.
  • Andy may also be concerned that our progress as a group has not properly 'bedded down' the collaboration concept yet.
  • Hence Andy may not be ready to focus on the end goal - to address global problems,
  • Are we being too purist or aspirational, in our endeavours to adopt a collaborative leadership style?
  • What are the other contributors / prospective decision makers concerned about?

I am interested in your thoughts.

What is the difference between an interim steward and a ongoing one?

The role of interim stewards should not differ from the role of ongoing stewards.

For example. using defining the role of farmers who produce our food:

The self-perception of many current farmers (with a profit motive) is as "food producers". Whereas the desired perception should be as "custodians of the land" (to leave the farm (ecology) in better shape than when they acquired it).

Defining the ultimate role at the outset will ensure the outcome we need overtime, even if interim stewards cannot fulfil the ultimate requirement from the outset.

Ideally the role of both interim and ongoing stewards includes the ability to see the 'big picture' to direct the strategic planning process for the movement.

@philippgrunewald in response to your comment in the google doc. "I am not sure if you want me to comment on such matters as a member of the secretariat but lets see what others feel."

If you are a member of the secretariat, where do I fit?

My interest is developing the 'big picture' to support the Stewardship Council who in turn support the constellations to achieve mission outcomes

The Book of the Board (effective governance for non-profit organisations) is an excellent reference to consider roles, policies, procedures, agreements. Attached is relevant to our thinking about interim stewards.

@edwalta Thank you for the inputs. I have just re-worked the document to include some of it. Please keep in mind that what we do here is all beta version. And I feel it is beneficial to approach the CoLab with a perpetual beta mindset. Additionally, it is in the nature of collaboration that no single party is 100% satisfied with any outcome. That is a good sign in that it indicates common ground. I am saying this because you will look at the document and will see that not all the ways in which you see things are explicitly taken up. Let me know your thoughts.

@philippgrunewald, happy with your re-worked proposal. I thank you for your patience with me. I hope my contributions don't make you too nervous, always interesting to see what does stick. Haha, Ed

Hi everyone, the proposal looks good to me - I have made a few comments - mainly about being really clear that a good number of the people invited need to be embedded and active in permaculture organisations, enterprises and networks.

Great. Thank you all for participating in this. We will now move ahead and implement this. I will start to coordinate, with others who have raised their hand in the process, the moving forward.

As discussed on our last conference call/on Slack/in Trello, etc. I am now opening the proposal for decision making.

I think the proposal, as it currently stands will allow us to move forward, engage more people in the leading of the CoLab and facilitate us creating tangible outcomes by IPC India. It would be great to have more people engage in shaping the initiative and I think what we have here is good enough to give it a go.
