More cowbell?

DCM David Corrin MEL Public Seen by 141

We trialled the use of a cowbell at spring tournament for indicating that the team in possession had been awarded a delayed penalty. I believe it worked flawlessly. I'd like to see us trial it as a group and if we all agree, make a suggestion to NAH to trial it also.

Like this idea, should certainly be audible in a polo game.
As a bonus; I love cowbells, so euro.

Worked well indeed. Hand signals are insufficient. How do we petition NAH?

Should I Fedex John H a cowbell?

Maybe Sydney would be keen to trial it one more time because almost everyone who will have an opinion will be there. @brooktaitstyles?

@davidcorrin I haven't been involved at all regarding this upcoming Sydney tournie but I think @kent-syd is already on the case and might be trying to locate one.

The trick with any mechanism in all sports is a balance between visibility and sound. Sports like soccer only use a whistle and ban all whistles in the crowd (or would stop the game if they heard one) to stop confusion. If we use a cowbell we'd have to ban it in the crowd. It might get trickier with bigger games. Pickup it would obviously be perfectly fine. I think a strong visual key is also required like flags or what the NFL use.

I think we're all in agreement that a whistle can't be used for advantages.

LED lighting around the top of the barriers? orange for advantage, red for penalties.

@brooktaitstyles,

§1.1.9.3 – Delayed Penalty – If the team that does not have possession of the ball commits a penalty, an advantage is signaled by raising an arm straight into the air and shouting: “Advantage, (Team with possession)”.

Yeah the arm raise is totally insufficient.

I'll bring the small cowbell we used at spring and give it to kent. ideally Id like a three button box in front of me with a whistle, cowbell and buzzer. After a full day my ears hurt from the whistle. Would be good to have everything pumped out of a speaker at floor level that everything comes from to decrease court to court confusion.

Also, all refs must have microphones if they are expected to red more than just a few games. Losing your voice can cost you a tournament....

I'm so passionate about this stuff so sorry if I rant.

@alanengland your idea is brilliant for everyone, especially for the hearing impaired! If we did rgb we could also use it for the joust. It's a pipe dream but this is where great ideas start.
