Initial participatory budgeting trial

D Darren Public Seen by 114

Following from the well supported proposal this group has been created as a space to collaboratively develop a participatory budgeting process.

I sketched out how i felt such a process could run, but am very happy to hear other peoples ideas. I'd encourage people to read the discussion in that thread, also the two linked threads that lead to that proposal.

This, somewhat surprisingly, given it appeared members were keen, has so far attracted no attempts at active participation. I found that a bit demoralizing, and have been tied up in other stuff so nothing has yet happened. But i would like to still move this forward.

To clarify we have £600 available to fund other projects and Im going to start more actively inviting suggestions for stuff we could fund. So please comment here if youve got any ideas!

Im also going to somewhat document the process and try and gauge the effectiveness of different methods to drive participation.

@Darren

Rather than blaming fellow members it might be worth noting that Loomio says your initial proposal was only "seen by 2" on my screen. Perhaps you did not invite anyone to the initial post, so they didn't see it. I recommend using the Loomio invite tool to invite the full membership. I am only seeing it for the first time now.

@Nathan Schneider @Darren

I can't speak for others, but the reason why I've been absent from Loomio is that I'm in the thick of teaching and grading for the Spring semester. I'm dipping in today just to see what's been going on, and might have some time for deeper conversations next week (my Spring Break), but for now I need to focus my mental efforts elsewhere.

I did invite everyone and linked to this group in the outcome to the well supported proposal to create this group/make this effort - that should of been seen by a whole load of folks who were engaging in the prior conversations.

Think i blamed myself as much as anyone else? I was just being honest about finding the lack of activity here demotivating. Nice way for you to frame it though 😐

The only other person here only joined after i also tried to promote this effort a bit in the coops matrix rooms soon after this group was created.

Like i said I'm planning to try a few different things to see what responses there are. Today I tried the co-op matrix room. Was thinking to leave it a couple days then get an announcement on Mastodon & then also after another few days could try using Loomios invite tool.

I apologize if my note was unkind or misread your tone. I'm grateful to you for doing this. I'm just a bit perplexed as to why only a handful of people have even seen the post. On my screen it says only 1 person was notified of the post.

I would be happy to help promote the discussions, especially since this is something the Finance Working Group really wants to encourage!

I wonder if it might also be easier for people to engage if you were to summarize your proposal at the top here, rather than just pointing to the link. Following the link, I actually had trouble finding the proposal itself. (I think Loomio can be weird about locations in threads.)

+1 on that. @Darren I'd also suggest posting it on a blog or a wiki, so you can link directly to it. You might even find you want to flesh it out a bit, or update it with any new thoughts you've had since you posted it on Loomio. If you put a copy on an Etherpad (eg https://pad.disroot.org/p/social-coop-budgeting), we can add notes, questions, comments etc.

Summer has just come to an end where I am and I've been on the road for the most of the last few months. Now that I'm back in the studio, I can make some time to engage a bit more with this, but I'm also going to be busy working on a new Mastodon hosting co-op based here in Aotearoa.

Itll be interesting to see what methods work (if any?!?) to actually get some people to get involved - despite posting an invite in our open matrix chat yesterday theres still only 3 of us here! 11 people seen that and I recognise a number of them as members who are regularly active on Loomio. Was a bit of chat there and somewhat overlapping stuff (funding/stipends) in the tech group chat

Thinking using the announcement feature on Mastodon stands a better chance to drum up some interest

Thanks for starting this initiative! I’m pretty new to the community so don’t know quite what format you’d like to receive the input in. Should we just put suggestions for projects to support in this thread?
