Platform Co-op Conference Presentation Feedback Requested!
Hey all. The deadline for the slides for our 7 minute "showcase" presentation of social.coop at the #PlatformCoop conference at the New School in NYC is coming up on Friday, and I just started outlining the presentation and would welcome comments, suggestions, and feedback! The working outline document can be found here.
I'll have a draft ready ASAP :)
Hi @matthewcropp here you can find a first draft of a ready-to-use deck template:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9hw056p8ai0uh4x/deck_template.odp?dl=0
Please be aware that to edit it properly you will need to install the following fonts:
- Comfortaa
- DejaVu Sans Light
both of which are available in the Ubuntu store (if you are running it) or as open source packages. Here is a PDF version of the template for reference:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/22airanr97puwpx/deck_template.pdf?dl=0
PS. For best results use Libreoffice 5 :)
wow, beautiful!
Thanks! :)
Alright, first draft of slides for review here
Nothing to say about the content, just a few notes about the look&feel:
- Comfortaa is not best suited for body copy, as the kerning is pretty wide... Could you try DejaVu Sans Light instead? If that's too thin (definitely a possibility on a large screen) we might go for DejaVu Sans
- try keeping titles consistent across sections (eg. slide 2 says "social.coop is..." but the title in slide 3 is "social.coop origins")
- Use the "subtitle" elements to intruduce topics (eg. "why mastodon" on slide 6)
- try using lower-case titles if possible, as that's our typographic style (social.coop is always lowercase as it is a domain name)
- slide 10 could use a little more attention :)
Feel free to send me the original if you want me to work on the layout! :)
Reviewing the slides, but It seems I may be late to the party. Friday 3rd, meaning yesterday, or next Friday 10th 2017? Internationally speaking, 2017-11-03 or 2017-11-10?
Friday the 3rd - I was hoping to get to it earlier, but the overtime period for the Keep BT Local campaign ate way more of my capacity than I'd have liked. I integrate a bunch of folks' feedback from both here and Masto, so fingers crossed.
I'm also thinking it'd be great to organize to have folks on our instance in the time immediately following my presentation to welcome new folks as they come in! :) I might create a check poll to coordinate that...
Friday, 2-6pm: Welcome New Members Following the #PlatformCoop Conference Pitch
opt-in by Matthew Cropp Closed Fri 10 Nov 2017 7:09PM
Matt Cropp will have 7 minutes to pitch social.coop to attendees of the Platform Co-op conference in NYC at some point between 2 and 5pm EST this Friday the 10th. As we'll hopefully get a nice burst of new members following the presentation, it'd be great to have a critical mass of existing members to welcome them.
As such, please check 'yes' if you can commit to popping onto social.coop and being chatty at some point between 2 and 6pm EST on Friday!

The problem is that we don't have a system in place on the new infrastructure for accepting new members yet... Will see what we can do!
@mayel I've been checking the new applicants page once a day or so and inviting new folks as their apps roll in. Are those acceptances not actually going out?
@matthewcropp yeah they are being queued but not going out. @victormatekole volunteered to create accounts manually for the sake of the conference though
Huh - must be going on for a while, as I talked to brendan donovan, who's here and applied back in the beginning of the month. @victormatekole , could you make one for him? (November 2)
When did they stop going out? We might have a significant backlog :(
@mayel and @victormatekole, any chance of having a quick verbal check-in to get on the same page w/ the game plan before I present?
hey @matthewcropp I can't comment on the backlog — @mayel would have better insights on that as he authored the on-boarding app. Nonetheless, I can afford some time early tomorrow morning and run through that backlog and can do the same later on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, I have family duties this evening and won't have time to jump on a call. Is there something specific you wish to address?
@matthewcropp ever since the server migration. sorry I'm not able to jump on a call this evening either
Cool, no worries, more of a personal anxiety assuaging thing than anything else on the call request front, as I suddenly had the vision of pitching it to everyone, folks getting excited, then nobody being able to actually join. If you'll be on the case in the short-term @victormatekole adding people manually in the immediate followup to the presentation so that newcomers can start using social.coop for conference chatter, that knocks my worry level down a bit.
Murphy's Law and suchnot: Slow trickle of members, onboarding works just fine. Pitching to target audience all gathered in one place? Onboarding hiccups... :P
@mayel should I stop approving new applications until further notice from you if accounts are going to be made manually until this is figured out? Or does approving them queue them up for a mass invite when the system is fixed so I should keep doing that?
@matthewcropp if there are any issues — I will be on standby to assist.... Just mention me via loomio or ping me on my mail address.
The latter.
I'm back in Vermont after the conference, and, as promised, the notes from the Code of Conduct conversation can be read here.
Also, how are we doing for onboarding new members @victormatekole and @mayel - definitely got some good interest drummed up! :)
If anyone like @nev or @michelekipiel with graphics-fu might be able to whip up a template slide deck with our logo and color scheme on it, I would be sooooo happy!
