Quote of the Day

TH Tim Huegerich Public Seen by 3

Each day a random Marshall Rosenberg quote is chosen to display at login, from out of the following list:

  • "We need to receive empathy to give empathy."

  • "Don't just do something, be there."

  • "Postpone result/solution thinking until later; it's through connection that solutions materialize."

  • "Empathy allows us to re-perceive our world in a new way and move forward."

  • "Always listen to what people need rather than what they are thinking about us."

  • "Our goal is to create a quality of empathic connection that allows everyone’s needs to be met."

  • "People heal from their pain when they have an authentic connection with another human being."

  • "Your presence is the most precious gift you can give to another human being."

  • "Empathy lies in our ability to be present without opinion."

  • "Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing."

  • "Instead of offering empathy, we often have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own position or feeling. Empathy, however, calls upon us to empty our mind and listen to others with our whole being."

  • "The most important use of NVC may be in developing self-compassion."

  • "NVC was designed to keep us in a dance with other people. A dance in which the whole purpose is to let what happens between us, happen according to a rhythm of compassion."

Please share your ideas for other quotes we could use.

These quotes always inspire me.

My only comment is to ask whether or not you wish to expand outside of Marshall Rosenberg (or even NVC per se) to have relevant quotes (e.g., "Suffering is inevitable. Suffering alone is intolerable" - Dr. Sue Johnson, psychologist). I can see value in that, yet it may lose the focus of the site.

I like that quote. Yeah, it's something I've pondered. The initial decision to limit to Rosenberg was intended to give a sense of familiarity and belonging, and I'm not aware of anyone else universally recognized and well-regarded in the NVC community, unifying in that way. Maybe Carl Rogers, who I think was Marshall's thesis advisor? But he's well-known in his own right, and I imagine that some could be put off by him (just pure speculation--I have nothing specific in mind).
