Are we giving credit where credit is due?

There are a ton of great looking people in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:New_Zealand_scientists almost none of whom seem to get talked about. Should we be talking more about our great scientists (living and dead)? Which ones?

@pierreroudier, @stuartyeates, @kimberleycollins..
I know this is a bit weak, but something doesn't feel right about Twitter. I would like each post to stand alone in a sense. Also, I dislike platforms that require you to sign up in order for you to feel part of the discussion.
Don't have a strong opinion really though.

"Also, I dislike platforms that require you to sign up in order for you to feel part of the discussion." you mean like loomio.org?

Tim McNamara Thu 15 May 2014 3:59AM
Loomio requires contributors to create an account.
For consuming content, I don't think you should feel obligated to sign in.

Tim McNamara Thu 15 May 2014 9:17AM
@kimberleycollins do you think it would be possible to create a "People" subject within scienceclub.co.nz?

Tim McNamara Fri 23 May 2014 12:26AM
@stuartyeates what else apart from the platform needs to be worked out?
@kimberleycollins do you have any time to expand your views on what would be more suitable?

Stuart Yeates Fri 23 May 2014 12:42AM
to be worked out:
(a) someone really familiar with the platform needs to create some exemplar posts we can use as house style
(b) find a good handle that reflects what it is we're trying to achieve
(c) work out rough posting rate
(d) work out any quotas (>40% women? >15% maori and pacifica? >50% still alive?)
(e) get familiar with the tool we're using for creating and proofing the posts
(f) build a backlog

I am happy to create a people blog entirely on Science Club. That could be categorised by anything from gender, field, etc. Here's a really basic mock-up. It's a very easy service to use - all I need to do is send an invite.

Stuart Yeates Fri 23 May 2014 2:21AM
The mock-up looks good, @kimberleycollins !
Bear in mind that we don't have images for most researchers. We maybe need a link "For their full biography, see their wikipedia article..." or something.
Categorisation by gender is hard. Consider https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuimaono_Karl_Pulotu-Endemann
Categorisation by field is easier, there are things like http://www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/4AE1B46AE2048A28CA25741800044242?opendocument which are what PBRF and etc are based on.
Would a couple of us get logins to the blog to create / proof blogs?

Kimberley Collins Fri 23 May 2014 3:10AM
If you don't have a photo of them, you can include a photo of something they study...
If you want me to add you as admins, i just need an email address.
Let's just get things started and see how we can start categorising from there, eh?

Tim McNamara Fri 23 May 2014 5:51AM
Tags on each post should be fine. Once we get a few posts up, we can create different views, etc.

Tim McNamara Fri 23 May 2014 5:56AM
For house style, I recommend 4 sentences max, ideally a photo (we can be somewhat looser than Wikipedia re licencing), quite factual. Younger intended audience.
I am interested in the 'shareable' narrative, whereas I think that Stuart is interested in making sure that there is a 'discoverable' narrative. Discoverability is aided by being thorough with categorisation. Shareable is helped with imagery and terseness.
For live researchers, I recommend linking to their homepages where possible.
If we find lots of info, then I would add references to the Wikipedia's talk page. I wouldn't want our articles to become too biographical.

Stuart Yeates Sat 24 May 2014 10:42AM
My email is syeates@gmail.com
I think we should be linking (a) to the most audience appropriate further reading and (b) to the sources used in the our writeup (which may or may not be the same).

Thanks for the invite @kimberleycollins. Looks like it requires flash, so I'll have to find a browser that supports that.
