Members list tweak

Like. Perhaps with a tool-tip name on hover?

Matthew Bartlett

Also could order by recentness of activity

Jesse Doud

I'm conflicted. I really love the visual playfulness and reducing the size of massive lists. I'm not sure if this will impede users easily finding members.

Jesse Doud

I wanted to raise that concern, but I still think it's an improvement over the current display.

Richard D. Bartlett

Next iteration: just show 10 most recently active members, and link to full list

Jesse Doud

omg yes @richarddbartlett. feature perfection.

Looks very good @matthewbartlett I do think the link to the full list @richarddbartlett has suggested would be good!

Jesse Doud

I reckon you should issue a pull request matt. nice work

Robert Guthrie

YESYESYESYES

Two details.. decide on a max members to display and the ordering. But that should not hold up this as a pq. It's great

Matthew Bartlett

Product Owner @benjaminknightloom, are you okay with this going in?

Matthew Bartlett

I'm having trouble understanding the failing spec; anyone care to help? @robertguthrie

Benjamin Knight

No issues from me - this looks awesome!

Benjamin Knight

argh on second thought (and after talking with Jon) I'm wondering if this could be super confusing for brand new groups (i.e. just seeing a bunch of initials and not being able to see the names of who's in their group). What do you think?

Benjamin Knight

@matthewbartlett if you wouldn't mind doing some really basic informal user testing with some less tech-savvy peeps I'd feel heaps better about it.

Matthew Bartlett

@benjaminknightloom can you help me out with user testing questions?

Richard D. Bartlett

A heading saying Members and a tooltip saying their name... I have a hard time imagining that being confusing. And the harm caused by that confusion seems pretty minimal. @benjaminknightloom

Benjamin Knight

If @matthewbartlett's up for it, I reckon some super quick user testing would be way better than just making the assumption that it's not going to confuse people.

Matthew, I think even just showing a few fresh people the mockup (particularly in the scenario where there are only a few members and none of them have avatars in place) and asking them how they would be able to tell who the members of their group are (or whatever similar questions - i.e. 'how would you check who's joined the group?' etc) would do it.

What do you think?

Benjamin Knight

PS I think the more normalised we can get rough and ready user-testing involved in the design processes the better our designs will be and the less daunting user testing needs to seem

Jesse Doud

@matthewbartlett Here is the folder for User Testing
There are great guidelines in there as well as a couple of testing notes/results (the more recent one is much more focused). I reckon for this instance you would test users to find their groups members with the avatar branch against the current one. I ran the last run solo b/c of team capacity, but it a better environment for the user if there are two people. Hit me up tomorrow if you're in the office if you want to discuss.

Aaron Thornton

@matthewbartlett I haven't had tie to look but make sure you haven't deleted the pending member requests at the bottom of the list. This will probably have tests on it.

Matthew Bartlett

@aaronthornton Thanks, but nah I didn't. The weird thing is that the test adds two users and checks to see they're added; and one is, but the other isn't.

Alanna Irving

Sorry I know I am dropping in late on this one, but @matthewbartlett please please don't do this.

As someone who administrates a lot of groups, I use the list of names of members constantly to check if someone is already in a group, find their email address, etc. Changing to pictures would make it pretty useless for me.

Can I ask, what is the utility of a grid of initials/pictures? Is there any rationale besides "it looks prettier"? If not, please don't take away a useful feature....

Maybe this would be an appropriate change if we had a lot of other features already in place, like the system knowing when you go to add someone to a group if they are already a Loomio user and popping up with their name/email/pic like they do on trello. I understand this might be in the works already.

Anyway, this feature really needs some suer testing. I'm willing to believe I'm an edge case if you test on other users and group admins and they all love it, but my first reaction is really against this change.

Alanna Irving

Yeah I've used that.... I guess that would serve the same purpose as the members list does now and I could just click into that page.

I still don't understand the positive argument for a grid of initials/pictures - what is it trying to achieve? It seems like a non-utilitarian use of space, when having the names listed there is actually serving a purpose.

Matthew Bartlett

@alannakrause Interesting! Thanks for the very useful & bracing feedback.

My rationales:

  • it looks prettier. In large groups particularly, it's presently a crazily long box. Feels unwieldy & inelegant to me
  • it's out of proportion to its importance (I'm thinking of a design principle like "The most used / most important stuff is most prominent / most available".
  • I'm thinking of the future, and attempting to nudge the members box into 'Who's in the room?'

Would you be okay with it if it had an 'expand' or similar link, that showed the old full list?

Alanna Irving

Yeah once I realized I could click into the edit memberships page like Rich mentioned, I stopped freaking out :)

I still advocate for user testing on this one. I agree it's a big use of space and we should think carefully about what we want there.

Matthew Bartlett

@alannakrause These are the questions I asked my first testee yesterday evening. Do you want to add some that address the kinds of things coordinators might want to do?

  • how many members are in your group?
  • Is John Irving in the group?
  • How would you find John’s email address?
