Groups in the fediverse

In social.coop Loomio, discussion has been highlighting the challenge of implementing groups in the fediverse . Here's a space to explore the state of the quest.

Specifically folks have been enquiring about the status of groups in Bonfire. @Lynn Foster @Danyl Strype @ dynamic

I can mention that @Helge is exploring Group behavior, and we had rich discussion on the subject 2 days ago in Common social groundwork outreach channel of Social coding commons, where we elaborate Social experience design and Hedonic peer production on the basis of a formula for Chaordic organization in order to stimulate cocreation at scale within grassroots environments.

(And all the links dropped in quick succession to this fine commons based cooperative, is an example of "Weaving in commons", which is an extension to "Weaving in public".)

I should add that the Bonfire team, Ivan and Mayel, are members in the room, at the Social experience design outreach channel (focusing on the social in 'social networking'. And Mayel is also in Common social groundwork, the technical-oriented chatroom). I will give them a heads up there :)

Thanks @mike_hales @Danyl Strype @Arnold Schrijver ! To me, it's pretty cool to have this kind of discussion in the mostly-dormant but somehow long-lived Open App Ecosystem! But I do have questions (without answers) about really where is best. There are a number of discussions in SocialHub of the Fediverse. And of course what Arnold brought up above, another active set of Fediverse related places. (I am behind on all of the above, and find it really hard to keep up with the ever-changing shapes of the Fediverse support communities.)

I also wonder what should be the scope of this kind of discussion, Fediverse or broader? I wonder what you were thinking about scope Danyl with your suggestion to bring it here? I'm very interested in how we can (or if we can at this stage) work more on interops both within and between technical ecosystems that have a lot of overlap in intent. Group would be a pretty central piece of this. People's thoughts about scope will affect what is the best place.

Mainly I was wanting to avoid hijacking the discussion about social.coop testing a Bonfire instance 😁 The subject of group federation has been discussed at length on SocialHub, and as @Arnold Schrijver says, elsewhere too, so I wanted to avoid rehashing it in those places.

Maybe as a thought experiment, we could try to sketch out how ActivityPub groups could be used to federate Loomio<>Loomio? Which would give us a practical focus to explore the protocol design thinking that's been done for federated groups so far?

Ping @Mayel de Borniol , @ivan , you keen to get in on that? Maybe we could explore hypothetical possibilities of Bonfire<>Loomio federation?
