VOTE MOGG OUT leaflet
At yesterday's meeting we discussed this A4 leaflet. This leaflet will have a print run of about 5K and be delivered by us (to conform to electorall spending limits). One side will feature Dick's pink Top Hat Vote Mogg Out design (not the For the Few design which precedes it - sorry can't separate them etc.) . The reverse side is a tri-fold leaflet. We've decided on the wording for the front & reverse sides of the leaflet and concluded it will be entirely Mogg-themed (so no other anti-Brexit arguments). Theme is to show he's not a 'man of the people', on an elevated platform and doesn't care about the concerns of ordinary folk. Please don't suggest any changes to layout etc. as it won't look like this (Dick Daniel will be revamping) - all we're focusing on is the text. The bit that needs some work is the inside. At the bottom it will have the tactical voting stuff - no change there. But it's the top bit we hadn't quite decided -we thought Top Toff Quotes - 3 things he's said (plus dates he said them) that make him look bad. This needs to be finalised today to go to Dick for the design, back to us for a final check so Mark can order by the end of the week. '

A quote from 2006?
Jane Riekemann Wed 13 Nov 2019 5:47PM
Okay, it's a bit old but they referred to it in an article quite recently. Can't find any evidence he said he's vote for Trump. I listened to the interview and they were prodding him to say that but he only said he's vote Republican - unless there was another interview where he said it.
Maggie Turner Wed 13 Nov 2019 6:59PM
I remember another occasion on Have I got news for you - when he said he would vote/support Trump - it was when Trump was running or had become president - there was a blonde wig involved and I was shocked hearing him saying he would support him... Have spent ages looking for it with no success

Ruth Malloy Wed 13 Nov 2019 4:18PM
I agree with Susanne that it's better to use more recent quotes. Also, can we have a darker shade of cerise pink, please?
Susanne Haberer Wed 13 Nov 2019 4:50PM
@ruthmalloy Just to say that the pink in the latest version is much darker than in the attached. The current design uses the shade of the People's Vote pink.

Sally Long Wed 13 Nov 2019 4:53PM
Looks good to me. I still like the man of the people/latin quote - maybe in place of potted plants if that is too old.

Sally Long Wed 13 Nov 2019 4:54PM
I thought the front side was different - the MOGG OUT message with the PV pink.

Alison Born Wed 13 Nov 2019 5:03PM
yes, what happened to Mogg out? We need to be absolutely sure re the quotes.
Jane Riekemann Wed 13 Nov 2019 5:45PM
Not quite sure why it's the Many Not the Few appears (its on the same PDF) - should be Mogg Outand Dick does know that , I'm sure. Yes , it's deeper pink. I need to sign this soon in a bit so this is it -
TOP TOFF QUOTES
· JRM would be too clever to die in a fire and suggested he would ignore the advice of the Grenfell fire fighters: ‘It just seems to be the common sense thing to do’ (5/11/19)
· Sally's Vox Pop - can you let me have it again with the date?
· We won’t know the full economic consequences (of Brexit) for a very long time ‘ … ‘over the next 50 years’ (22/07/18)
Are you okay with the way the other quotes are presented? Please let me know a.s.a.p. Alison and Emma - your thoughts on the email I sent re. paper thickness and costs?
Susanne Haberer Wed 13 Nov 2019 6:07PM
From Sally's email earlier, R-M quote: "I'm a man of the people. Vox populi, vox dei." (19 January 2011)
Ian Bartle Wed 13 Nov 2019 6:35PM
Regarding first quote - (1) how do we refer to him - not 'JRM'? His full name? First name? Or Mogg? Or Rees-Mogg? Or Mogg Esq? (ok, not the latter). (2) The paraphrase bit seems a bit long, but haven't thought of anything shorter - certainly need to keep in 'Grenfell' and 'fire'.
Second quote - ok, but I wonder whether it'll just go over most people's heads? Or am I being condescending towards my fellow NES residents?!
Third quote - can we put a word or two in between the quotes to make it flow better? I haven't got any suggestion yet that doesn't sound like misquoting him.
I think we need to double check the quotes - dates and words - find the original source if we can. I can do this a bit.
Regarding the layout and colours etc I thought last night we agreed in principle what to do and we'd leave it to Dick to do the design.
Maggie Turner Wed 13 Nov 2019 6:54PM
If you want something humorous... In support of nannies JRM wrote in the Telegraph....
Jacob Rees-Mogg: My nanny made me the man I am
Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, who took his nanny canvassing with him, writes in defence of a British institution
14 March 2014
Ian Bartle Wed 13 Nov 2019 7:58PM
re 50 years, at the moment all I can think to include between the 2 quotes are either 'they may be' or 'the opportunity is'. Neither are particularly good.
Might the nanny quote sit nicely alongside (just before) the vox populi quote?

Alan Richard Champneys Thu 14 Nov 2019 8:25AM
Well done everyone. Can I suggest we don’t let the perfect be the enemy good 😄☺️. This is our one big chance (if labour and lib dens can play ball) to get JRM out. The most important thing must to be to get something printed ASAP then we can start delivering next week. We will start the turf cutting tomorrow. Could we be ambitious and get 10k or even 20k printed so we can blitz the constituency?
Jane Riekemann Thu 14 Nov 2019 8:34AM
No, 5K Max. if we get too many printed we won’t be able to deliver them ( we talked about this at the meeting) -We’ll struggle with these as most of us are hugely committed with our own party’s campaign. We’ll also be over budget ( or rather over what we can spend during the election). If you target one person there’s a low limit. Of £700.
Jane Riekemann Thu 14 Nov 2019 8:37AM
In about one hour I’ll redo the quotes and am then sending it to Dick. Give me alternatives rather than just saying what’s wrong with what’s there please.
Maggie Turner Thu 14 Nov 2019 9:57AM
I think the TO TOff quotes are excellent and then the Nanny one - endorses the different world that he lives in..
Jane Riekemann Thu 14 Nov 2019 10:38AM
Have now sent this to Dick.
Susanne Haberer Thu 14 Nov 2019 1:18PM
A small observation Dick might be able to address - The dates behind the quotes are in two formats, two with slashes, two with dots. I would make them consistent either way, would look better. Sorry if that's pedantic.
Jane Riekemann Thu 14 Nov 2019 2:31PM
No, not pedantic at all. Well spotted. I'll tell him.

Dick Daniel Fri 15 Nov 2019 6:02PM
I have been working on the Mogg leaflet.
The Top Toff Quotes have been rewritten yet again to make them more snappy & punchy.
The poster has also been changed to be more like the Peoples Vote style and to stand out more.
Ian Bartle Fri 15 Nov 2019 11:16PM
The design and colour looks great, well done. But the text doesn't seem to be what we agreed. The quotes are different - I thought we weren't going to go for 2006 potted plants one, doesn't look right to me. A few other things about the quotes also need tidying.
Also, and very importantly, we shouldn't recommend one particular tactical voting site (there are several and for NES they give different party recommendations and we are a non party group). We have agreed at more than one meeting that we'd just have the link to our website which would then point people to the various different tactical sites (in fact the site dontspilttheremainvote.com summarises the various different sites).
Jane Riekemann Sat 16 Nov 2019 8:14AM
Brilliant design and layout. Yes, we did agree the quotes but if the original 4 were too many then lose one - possibly the vox populi one? Although I came up with the potted plant quote, it’s 13 years old and everyone thought it not recent enough. I really don’t care but I do agree with Ian about not recommending one site - especially as the one on the leaflet points to a specific party; however, as a compromise we could use this as it offers a comparison https://dontsplittheremainvote.com so it would allow us to stay non-aligned. This needs to be wrapped up over the weekend and ordered on Monday or it will be too late.

Sally Long Sat 16 Nov 2019 10:54AM
100% agree that it would totally undermine the leaflet to promote one specific tactical site. We should stick to the agreed plan to refer people to the BfE site.
Also we normally say Bath for Europe is non-party-aligned (rather than political).
Abstaining on the quotes issue.

Sally Long Sat 16 Nov 2019 10:58AM
Also, @Dick Daniel. You seem to have doctored on of the Jacob images with red eyes, vampiresque eyebrows and a hint of Hitler moustache. Whilst we don’t want to paint JRM in the best light, this could be a bit too much. It’s probably more subtle here than when printed.
Jane Riekemann Sat 16 Nov 2019 11:08AM
No to red eyes and moustache - we don’t want to be sued.
Susanne Haberer Sat 16 Nov 2019 12:22PM
Agree with the above re URL (stick with the discussed BfE) and vampire touch (a bit too much).
I think the design generally looks great.
As for the quotes, I still think the one from 2006 is too old. As a quick and straight forward change (length), I would just swap the potted plants one with the vox populi one.
@ianbartle If you think quotes need tidying up, what changes did you have in mind?

Sally Long Sat 16 Nov 2019 5:23PM
One other thing which has occurred to me... we were going to put in a line about Bath for Europe campaigning across B&NES, to avoid a "them and us" thing.

Dick Daniel Sat 16 Nov 2019 7:16PM
I have changed the wording to the original suggestion.
I have change the tactical voting to Janes suggestion to dontsplittheremainvote. My daughter said when it had just BfE on it 'but it does not say who to vote for and people won't go to BfE and then another website'.
Changed the picture to be nicer, but put it in Black & white.
What do you want it to say about B&Nes ?
Let me know which are wanted.

Ruth Malloy Sat 16 Nov 2019 9:05PM
The revised leaflet looks great. Black & white photos much better in my opinion.
Ian Bartle Sat 16 Nov 2019 10:19PM
The revision looks really good - hopefully nearly there, but just a few things, sorry to be a pedant.
1. Better to put 'Esq' - it stands out a little more and highlights a little more how ridiculous he is. The correct form I think is 'Jacob Rees-Mogg, Esq.,' (that's the form the man himself addresses people when writing to his lowly male constituents like me). I'm not suggesting we include 'Jacob'.
Re BANES I'd put 'help with the campaign in Bath & NES' - makes it a little clearer that they are both part of the same campaign.
We've now got 'top toff quotes' followed by 'top Mogg quotes'. Isn't that repetitive? Do we need the second phrase?
Quotation mark at end of nanny quote is of a different style to the beginning.
As far as I can tell (ie going to the channel 4 website - the quote was from C4 news) the 50 years quote was on 18/7/18 not 22/7/18. The Huffington Post article about it was on 22/7/18.
ok re the tactical site. But we have discussed this at more than one meeting and there is no easy solution because there is no unequivocal recommendation - people will have to click on different sites and think about it. Two of the sites referred to on the don't split the vote are for Labour, two for Lib Dem. And two other sites (People's Vote and tactical vote.co.uk) don't have a recommendation yet. Unless there is a dramatic change in the next couple of weeks people are going to have to think about it.
Jane Riekemann Sun 17 Nov 2019 9:04AM
I keep trying to post, think I’ve done it but it’s not up. Last try! Thx Dick for making the alterations - looks fantastic. Could you capitalise Not sure we need Mogg quotes as well as Top Toff - but don’t care. We need to get this leaflet out h
Jane Riekemann Sun 17 Nov 2019 9:06AM
Posted too early! We need to get this leaflet to be printed now so we have something to hand out next weekend. Dick - can you send it to Mark to order 5K . Thx.
Maggie Turner Fri 22 Nov 2019 6:55PM
I wonder if we can use the poster side of the Mogg Out leaflet when we receive them and start a persistent and concerted campaign on Facebook and circulate 48%, the Britain for Europe groups and other appropriate sites as to how BfE is fiercely campaigning to dislodge Mogg and saturate NES with leaflets. At the same time use Twitter and Instagram. We want to look like a powerful and intrepid force to be reckoned with in NES... (bearing in mind the number of leaflets)!!

Alice Hovanessian Wed 27 Nov 2019 12:53PM
Just found another Rees-Mogg quote we can use in the future - in column 372:
“Unfortunately, North East Somerset was not counted separately; we were infected by the votes of people in Bath. I am pretty confident that the wise people of rural Somerset voted to leave while the urbanites in Bath voted to remain.”
Maggie Turner Wed 27 Nov 2019 4:42PM
Have leafleted Bathampton: done ✅
Jane Riekemann · Wed 13 Nov 2019 3:07PM
The Trump thing is weird. A report in some papers said that he said he'd vote for Trump but I can't find where he actually says that. It's inferred rather than said. This is what I put on the leaflet. I need a final version by 8 pm this evening as I won't be able to work on it after that.
