Would people be interested in disabling images in favour of alt text for World Sight Day and the Global Accessibility Awareness Day?

This toot proposes disabling images to highlight the importance of alt text descriptions on Global Accessibility Awareness Day and World Sight Day, May 16 and October 10. I wondered whether this was something Social Coop thought would be a good idea?

Sounds nice if it isn't a huge administrative ask!

I'm in favor! Stefan's guide makes it seem not too complicated. It seems like an opportunity to do something more meaningful than just a banner or article, in that it'll help people understand the importance of accessibility.

seconding Gabriel and nix - this sounds fantastic and if it's not too hard for admins I would love if our instance did this

Yes! Thanks for sharing the initiative. A simple gesture to support inclusion which makes communities like ours better.

I'm not against the idea but I am curious how it would work. Would we just make all images and videos 404? A lot of people including myself mostly use apps to access the instance so I am not sure how many people would be affected by a web frontend-only change. And like another recent proposal, this sounds like it's creating more work for the TWG so I would want them to have a consensus that they are willing to take this on before we sign them up for it.

replying as a member of TWG, not on behalf of it (our next meeting is Monday 22nd so we can discuss then) – this seems pretty easy to implement, and I'd be happy to help.

@eliotlash good question about apps; I think the proposed permissions change would affect all of them, not just the web frontend.

BTW my guess from reading-but-not-trying-out the file permissions tweak is that all images would 403, not 404.

@Calix shall we see what gets decided on the 22nd then, and if the twg doesn't think it would be too burdensome put it to a vote afterwards?
