This should be added as it gives a clearer picture of how many people of x came when and where.

Hi Henriette, I'm not sure if "Years since Arrival in NZ" is the best place to put my enquiry - please move it to OTHER if it doesn't fit your category.
Where would the fact that a householder and NZ resident might accept a HOMESTAY

FH

Frances Horton Tue 2 Jun 2015 9:07AM

STUDENT into their home for almost a year? Does a Homestay student count in the census? Does "Homestay Accommodation in private homes" count in the Accommodation section or the Education section?
Sorry this enquiry split into two posts - I accidently hit the wrong key.
Thanks and kind regards.
This online feedback opportunity closes in a week and I will miss contributing.
It's been good to think about issues in some depth.

Hi @franceshorton. A homestay student living in a household on census night would currently fill in an individual form, answering the question "Where do you usually live?", in terms of whether they will be staying in NZ for less than 12 months or not. If staying for less than 12 months in NZ, the address they give as their usual residence will be their address in their home country, otherwise their usual NZ address is given. Information about the country they were born in, the month and year of their first arrival in NZ and their ethnicity is also collected. If they have qualified to fill out a NZ address as their usual residence, information is then provided in response to further questions as per that answered by most other NZ residents, including giving information about who the people are that live in the same household as them eg: my host mother, host brother etc (this latter information is also filled in on the dwelling form by the person completing this). If however their usual residence is an overseas address as determined by the less than 12 months in NZ caveat, no further information about the individual is collected beyond the question about ethnicity and the form is then signed by the respondent as complete. Frances I hope this helps in terms of where and how information of this type would be recorded.

Thanks Henriette - I didn't realise that the Homestay Student receives their own individual form. I guess this would come from the College they're studying at. Thanks for the clarity.

The homestay student receives an individual form at the dwelling address in the same way that other members of the household do. Under the Statistics Act 1975, everyone in New Zealand on Census day must fill in a census form or have one filled in for them. The Census is a snapshot of the people in NZ on Census day and the places where they live and as such individual forms are linked to some form of dwelling.
