Discrete audio chip/card

Please pardon the ignorance, but what do you feel would be the best option for a discrete audio chip/card? It's probably been ~15 years since I've investigated this market..

in EOMA68 i'm deliberately using the CM108AH USB-audio IC plus a pair of TDA2822 amplifiers, re-routing the headphone audio to the TDA2822 with a 6-way stereo jack. the reason for doing it this way is because it's damn cheap.... oh and no NDAs need to be signed.

the down-side is that USB bulk framing is quite large and you get longer latency. audio is actually delayed (speed of sound in air compared to speed of light reaching eyes) in nature so humans are actually used to it, however Media-Centre-o-philes tend to complain, despite the fact that all video playback software can handle ms audio / video delaying / synchronisation.

for other SoCs when using an integrated single-board (non-user-upgradeable) style PCB, AC97 is the "normal" way to do it. you grab yourself absolutely any Maxim or othr AC97 audio IC, there's hundreds listed in the linux kernel source code, slap in some amplifier ICs if needed and you're done.

basically it hasn't really changed in 15 years :)

I2S audio might also be an option
