This year's report is particularly significant because housing affordability is emerging as an issue in the 2020 presidential campaign. Paraphrasing wrap-up from Harvard's Chris Herber, director of self-described Joint Center for Housing Gloom & Doom:
Bad news: Incomes are largely flat, unable to keep pace with housing costs. The question is how do we get incomes up? (BW -- It's obviously more complicated than that, see report for detail.)
Good news: That conversation is happening across the spectrum -- "What do we do about this? How do we make homes more affordably?" Many of the candidates are putting forward substantive policy proposals. There is an opportunity here -- as a country -- to have this discussion.
Next year's State of the Nation's Housing will hopefully reflect that innovative thinking, who wants to get a headstart before #ICLV19?
