Do you agree that the majority of board meetings should be open to the public?

Should board meetings be open to the public?

Making our board meetings public is one way to bring the community closer to the organisation and make them feel empowered to get involved. Are you comfortable making the board meetings public for anyone to listen in to?

Parts of the meeting can still be made private if there is something sensitive to discuss.

Happy to have public meetings, I'm all for that. Just let be sure we don't overstep people privacy and have a clear guideline on what could breach privacy if disclosed (i.e. on my part I will have to omit the names of all the people who apply to the microgrants, but will happily report on progress and on successful applicants)

I think some should be open, but that it should be a significant event.

I don't really think there's a problem with them being open, but like Elisa says, it is good to have something akin to the Chatham House Rule where we can be completely honest among the Board without fear.

The question for Board members is this: will having absolutely anyone present during a discussion change what you say?

I think this is critical to getting more people involved and looking beyond the legal formalities. If we find ourselves refraining from conversations that we would like to have because the meetings are public, then I agree we'll need to address each of those reasons.

As with Alex, if we have a significant decision pending that affects the community however I am not certain that we are that ready for this as we are building the systems and processes as we are a new board. I believe the approved minutes on the website are suffice at the moment however could we revisit this in the next quarter or two? I can see benefits however I can also see that an open meeting (and thus recording this) may cause issues for some, especially during office hours.

I agree in the majority to this, however, there should be consideration given to discussion to sensitive matters.
