Containers
Hi All!
Just posting this here as a way to keep a track of progress - for those who don't know we really want to replace the containers in the food hub! We discussed this at the meeting on 11th June, here's some of the points from that meeting;
Criteria for choosing containers:
o Ability to clean
o Closes well to keep food fresh and safe
o Food safe (i.e. not plastic which degrades)
o Allows you to see product inside
o Price
Secondary criteria (desirable but not necessary):
• Made sustainably
• Made locally
Should need around 40 – about ten of which would change regularly, the rest of which would always contain the same thing
Find 3 or 4 large containers to replace the muesli/oat bins – need to be closeable
And here is what Christa has found so far (Thanks Christa!)
I've found two different products, both supply from the UK. The cheaper option is http://www.ampulla.co.uk/Shop-For-Plastic/Large-Clear-Plastic-Jars/c-1-170-279/ and has a good range of sizes as I'm not sure what size we are using at the minute. The material used is PET and is easily recycled when we finish using them.
Trying to find more environmentally friendly ones is tough and I'm still looking into it! So far I have found this http://www.storeanddisplay.co.uk/range.php?id=35 Its uses a plastic that is made at a lower temperature than the therefore better for the environment however there is only one option of size and is more expensive.

Sorry I completely forgot to look into bins! I'll see what I can find. And getting 50 of those containers makes sense from what Joy said!

Great! Thanks Annmarie. I've bit the bullet and bought the bins off ebay (2) with my money so I'll bring in the receipt and get money from the till. I've also phoned the Plastic box shop for a quote on 50 boxes. Next thing to do will be labels... Rachel, have you had any ideas?!

Ok it's all happening! We have been quoted £4.25 plus VAT per box, which is a saving of 0.75p and works out at £5.10. It will be £255 in total. I did look into a) collecting them and b) buying a bigger order and selling them to coop members in order to get better deals/ save on delivery charges but neither of these options turned out to be good strategies. The company is based in North Yorkshire (Northallerton) though they are just stockists, they don't make them there. They'll be sending a proforma invoice which I'll pay next week, then they'll send them out, so by the end of next week, we should be in containers!!!! thanks everyone for the brilliant research and commitment. Let's continue to keep this moving... Joy

but is it the containers above? It says they are for dog food

That's great thanks Joy! Marcel I think the one that annmarie posted is the bin and these are the ones that Joy has bought http://www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/home-storage-c1/kitchen-organisation-c19/lock-lock-food-containers-c111/4lt-tall-square-plastic-cookie-jar-with-airtight-rubber-seal-lid-p1694

They are marketed for dog food but I thought that meant they were therefore suitable for dry food storage and seemed to be what we were looking for...?

I haven't looked for the bins...
I'm going away next week for three weeks. If you need something, let me know soon!
I think we should go ahead and buy the 50 containers Joy proposed.
