"I'm sorry that I can't make it Tonight. One thing that we have discussed before is short life housing similar to the UK model where a group negotiates with the council or property owner to take over vacant properties, bring them up to a basic standard and pay a nominal rent. The council/property owner benefits as the property is being maintained, and the tenants benefit by being able to access affordable housing. It may be worth pursuing as it's something that could be put in place fairly quickly"
this was suggested by my friend ... sounds a bit like a DIY camelot which would be great to try.
There are some groups that could collaborate/partner with on this... for example squatters (they can offer opening up vacant buildings in exchange) and organised homeless/housing activists (they can offer getting the ear of the council/developer/nama -- because they frequently do so by occupying their offices!)

I was chatting with a friend of mine who had a suggestion for how to get land for farming/housing cooperatives
(similar to what Irish land cooperatives group was trying to do https://www.facebook.com/Irish-land-co-operatives-270871272939003 and what @blueshane and others are trying to do at the moment)
He suggested going to villages/areas and asking round for local elderly farmers with no kith or kin or children who want to take over the farm.
He suggested making an agreement with them that the land would be taken over and run beneficially and that they would be taken care of when they retire.
He suggested a few farmers he knew that might be receptive on the east coast/Meath etc area.
It might be worth exploring if anyone wants to develop the idea more

on the other coast, this collective of collectives got themselves into a building about 2 years ago from crowdfunding, and at the moment are organising to buy it.

There is a woman engaging with elderly people to set up house shares, she might be interested in spreading the word a bit...

The guys from this are super busy but want to help others make things happen, so i hope that more of us can learn and get inspired to make things happen ourselves :)

Hey @julesdutchfitzsimo
I'd be interested in seeing if anything is possible with those houses alright. Could meetup to discuss it if you want?
Cheers,
Cillian

A 6 person housing cooperative in Oxford recently and successfully setup with crowdfunding. The investors could choose their own interest rate up to a maximum of 3%. With interest rates in banks so low the investment was attractive to people.
