Loomio

API to import / export / synchronize groups and teams with other tools on the internet

Not sure if this kind of idea has already been discussed before.

There are lots of apps on the net designed for group work that serve various purposes.
Producteev, Basecamp, Trello, etc.
There may be many more to come serving purposes that as of yet do not exist in the digital realm.
It would be good to develop features that provide open interoperability, connect the ecosystem up, reduce duplication and competition, increase collaboration efficiency and speed, that kind of thing.

e.g. how Slack has the option to enable anybody with (for example: an email @enspiral.com) to auto-join the group by navigating to the slack

Nah, we don't have that, nor do we have plans for something like that at this time. It could possibly be implemented into a premium feature though, if there's some customer push for it.

Like Nick, I'm just exploring Loomio, but my organization typically looks for tools with SSO integration options. In our case, we would want any of our staff members to be able to come here and respond to a proposal without having to create a new login profile.

We like SAML, btw.

Hi Kara — have you seen that Loomio does let people log in with Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts?

Yes, but we’d want to connect to it through their existing organizational account, like we do with other tools.

I'm curious - does anyone on the Loomio team have an update on this conversation?

We are thinking of broadening out the use of Loomio with different sub-groups of our organisation - but some of us are concerned about the added admin involved in adding/removing/updating the members of the group.

Would love to be able to sync with our member database (Civicrm at the moment) or at least export/import a spreadsheet every month (which automatically updates the member list).

Hi @samtoland,

Thanks for your question. If your organisation has an LDAP server, then we could setup a private Loomio install that authenticates against your LDAP, where you centrally manage your membership

Also, we offer a data export on our paid plans, which exports a CSV of all your records, including members.

We have no plans to integrate directly with CiviCRM

That's a shame @robertguthrie as both CiviCRM and Loomio are AGPL software, and I know a lot of organsations in Aotearoa using both and bemoaning the lack of integration. There are some Civi devs in the country too (ie the folks from Fuzion), which could make collaboration easier. Of course, I would recommend that integration work be based on open standards/ protocols (I imagine the Fuzion folks would too), so that it would be useful beyond Loomio-CiviCRM use cases.

At the risk of drifting off-topic, I have to say I think it's unethical to charge people money to export their own data. This is illegal in Europe under the new General Data Protection Regulation, and I'm hoping regulations of this kind become the norm in Aotearoa and worldwide. I implore the Loomio team to fully automate their export system and make it part of the free plan.

For clarification . . . is this discussion about import/export of member data, or any/all data, including threads/comments and/or linked uploaded resources?

We're building out GDPR compliance stuff now, so you'll be able to exercise EU rights on your personal data by or before May 25th.

We don't want to get into a situation of holding group data to ransom. Although I can see how our current plans suggest otherwise.

I can't give a good update right now (ugh!), but thanks for raising this. We'll be better placed to talk about this after we release our GDPR stuff.
