Important Agenda items for Hui

J Joybells Public Seen by 52

Agenda questions raised in this discussion so far.

  1. Do we need to form a National Timebanking body?
  2. Do we want CW2 on a NZ server?
  3. Should all Timebanks in NZ have some joining rules?
  4. What is the best form of communication for Timebank co-ordinators?
  5. Who should be responsible for managing, moderating and monitoring the TBANZ site?
  6. Who has permission to apply for National Timebank funding?
  7. Should we utilize Loomio to help TBANZ reach consensus on decisions?
  8. Tools for encouraging members to trade with each other
  9. Ways of helping build confidence of members to trade
  10. Supporting people in the timebank with disabilities or who have experience of mental health illness.
  11. Creative ways of working with businesses and organisations
  12. Do we inter Timebank trading? If so what is the best way?
  13. Size of timebanks (eg Auckland timebank: one or many?)

Sounds good. I think the hui will also be "open space" to catch other items that may not be on this list, but it's an important list and a great start.

Sounds like a great idea to me!

Its superb that this trial concensus system can try and represent the views of its members in its forum, a snapshot in time. Hui's and conferences are traditonally places of free speech, but also rubbing elbows & whispers at the coffee pot.

One way of using Loomio during the trial phase is to generate proposals which can then be considered at the hui. We can present each proposal we consider important, along with a brief summary of the points of discussion which shaped it, as a starting point for a discussion (and hopefully a consensus decision).

In fact, it's really the only way of using Loomio for now, since any proposal that succeeds here is only a consensus of this trial group, which has no mandate to make decisions on behalf of the movement. One thing that definitely needs to be hashed out at the hui is a robust, inclusive system for making decisions on the country scale between hui. Loomio could be part of that.

BTW This is the sort of open-ended discussion which would be better to hold on the TBANZ site forum, or using a wiki. IMHO it's clutter to have discussions in Loomio which aren't focused on evaluating options and coming to consensus on a decision.

Strypey my understanding is that this group is in trial phase which means we are trying things out and learning how best to use the tool as we go along. This trial group has NEVER proported to be in a position to have the mandate to make decisions on behalf of the NZ Timebank movement. We are however putting our time and minds into exploring methods that could be used for that very purpose in the future. I personally dont see the TBANZ site forum as a suitable place for discussing any of the questions I raised below as the TBANZ forum is open to anyone anywhere in the world, the site has no approved managment structure and there is noone monitoring or moderating sign ups or comments posted.

@Joy
I agree with everything you say about the TBANZ forums (publicly-viewable, unmoderated), I'm just not sure why any of those things make it a bad place to conduct an open-ended brainstorm about possible hui agenda topics. If TBANZ was incorporated, and this was a formal decision-making forum, any discussion here would need to be transparent to all TimeBank members, and potential members, ie the whole of the public.

Having said all that, I was actually trying to answer your initial question. I think that each one of the topics you list should be a separate discussion, because you only have one proposal on each discussion at once.

  7. PS - Should we utilize Loomio to help TBANZ reach consensus on decisions?

It's possible I'll be able to make it to the hui now and even though this group's still small (but growing!) I think we can have some discussions around agenda items to get some general ideas before the hui.

These discussions are openly visible to the wider timebank community and we still have room to invite more people if they'd like to be part of the pre-hui brainstorming.

I have no idea if we can do this in one discussion or whether it's better in several, but if we reference each point by number I think it'd be a good start? We can always branch the discussions off into new discussions if they require more depth.

I would also like to see some discussion around:

  • Tools for encouraging members to trade with each other
  • Ways of helping build confidence of members to trade
  • Supporting people in the timebank with disabilities or who have experience of mental health illness.

Oh and one more thing!

  • Creative ways of working with businesses and organisations

I think it's fine to use this discussion to gather agenda items. I have added the ones raised so far to the 'contact panel' above (nice new feature btw!). Some of these things might be fairly simple, and don't need in-depth discussions on Loomio, but for more complex ones (like CW2 server) I think it would be worth having a dedicated discussion thread, rather than have a number of complex discussions crossing over each other on this thread.

Awesome to see so much thought going into the upcoming Hui. Jen is correct, the programme is mostly ”open space”, so the agenda itself will be set by participants at the Hui. The theme for the Hui is “TimeBanking Aotearoa – creating our path into the future” so all these items will fit beautifully.

Just as a side note, everyone who has registered has been sent a programme, and information. If you have registered and not received an email please let me know.

Another agenda item: Do we want inter Timebank trading?

@Richard
I agree, and I'm certainly not proposing that the discussion here in any way limit the range and style of discussion at the hui. What it can do is:
a) give those of us who can't make it a chance to feed in some food thought
b) get a range of issues on the table and explore them a bit, so hopefully everybody who can go in person arrives with a clearer sense of what the most difficult issues are, and the ones they want to prioritise

Plus one for a discussion around national body

I'd also like to see the hui / group discuss Auckland timebank specifically *around size of timebank stuff

The 'size of timebank' issue was discussed a bit here:
