Skype Interviews with FR Artists Abroad

MRM Maia Robin McDonald Public Seen by 22

Video / Skype / Film Interviews.
If anyone wishes to contribute suggestions for exposure to contributors abroad and locally. Artists, groups, projects etc. For the online department of FR. Questions you would want answered, peoples voices you may want to hear, names to faces. Thinking caps on :)

I'm not sure exactly what the above statement means...Are we interviewing the contributors for the online section so that readers know more about them, or are we thinking of ways to promote them somehow?

If the first, then...

How did you become involved in FR?

What compels you to contribute towards FR?
Why?

What do you see as the functions of FR in the international community of readers?

This idea was formed in discussion with Barney as to how we could explore the creative processes and ideas that are happening abroad and locally. Thinking of new ways to interact and ask questions.
I think both things would happen if the interviews were successful, we would be a conduit for the wider community to ask questions and for the contributors to voice their interactions within their community.
I was living with Barney at Moxham ten years ago (aprox.) when I first knew of free range but it has been the first time I have had a chance to contribute, I am still trying to understand exactly what the function would be (or become) and this is why I think a discussion would be important. As to what compels me, I want to be involved in the wider creative community and Barney and Jacqui are both out there involved in things I admire and wish to be a part of. I hope that answers the questions :)

My understanding of this idea is that is it primarily away to proflie and promote the awesome things that all the people on freerange do. We write about other stuff all the time, and forget to promote each others amazing things. We talked about this and thought a dual interview things was a nice idea, so that its not an interviewer and interviewee, but people co-interviewing each other. And do to this on film, either remotely or in person. This is for two reasons. 1. People like watching short films on line, and 2. It'd be good for Freerange to explore flim more.

Exacamondo! Chats and fun times :) It would be great to see and chat with peeps in person on this one too. Mr B, perhaps in the new year, you, Jacs, me, other peeps of interest, mr coffee... Skype does make this sound slightly off putting, I shall edit that one for now! :)

The co-interview sounds like a good idea.. making videos would be great, but can look shitty if not done quite well... there are quality problems making a good skype video, but these could probably be overcome with irony and a good sense of humour.

such as calling it "tête-à-tête" and designing suggestive branding.

yep byron is right about the quality thing. and also it is def dependent on the internet speed that people have ... so many variables. i like byron's idea about using it as part of the aesthetic. we could develop that more...

Alternatively, it seems most of us are at least coupled temporarily in similar cities...

All great points to be made and discussed, I like the clunky nature that could be played upon and vice documentaries I have seen come to mind, where people explore the limitations of a medium, such as skype etc and then use it to their advantage, introducing naff elements that actually work in the long run and appear more sincere than something that could be slicker and less "home made" "tête-à-tête" sounds great Bryon. Also you could source and cut/edit the interview between, high res examples, pics or documentation of the ideas that are being discussed. All great possibilities, and always a face to face meet is much more ideal :)

hello! I like this discussion around exposing the quirks and benefits of the chosen medium a lot, and wanted to voice that it seems important to me, in a group interview like this, to expose the interconnections, the vast networky way that we work or the way we may have met --- not in a naff self-indulgent groupy way, but with an aim to expose the disciplinary cross-overs and their benefits to good theorising and discussion. Which is to me what freerange is about.
