Sounds wanted

Suggestions needed for artwork

I'm looking for suggestions for sounds for an art feature. They need to be short (no more than a few seconds), distinctive and loud. Things like bird calls (be specific - eg cockerel, peacock), bells, etc. but probably not music.

Actual sound files welcome but I can probably find some - it's just the ideas I want. Lots are needed, it's not a competition for the most suitable.

any and all animal sounds would be great. roaring lion, screaming monkey, cat meowing, dog barking, peacock scream, growling. also nature sound perhaps like.. a crack of thunder. avalanche. splash as something falls into water.

Thanks - this is exactly what i want. I think growl and meow are too slow and quiet to work well but I'll have them anyway. screaming monkey and splash are great and I didn't have them.

Thanks for supporting this project.

For anyone who didn't come across it, it was an audible clock (like a church clock, or a cuckoo clock) located near Welfare. It struck the hours and quarters between 9am and 8pm using a variety of appropriate and inappropriate sounds. The initial concept was that of a church clock - something you could rely on to tell you the time without thinking about it. The need to know the time was driven entirely by scheduling we couldn't completely remove, such as camp meal cooking and workshops. Like most of you, I didn't WANT to know the time. I just wanted to know I wouldn't miss a workshop on plastercasting fruit-flavoured sex toys, or whatever the day's highlight was.

The Nest grant went a long way to providing a powerful set of rechargeable batteries which will be re-used entirely for both this and other mobile projects. There were no wasted parts - everything was/is upcycled and recycled!

I heard mostly positive comments about it, though I'm aware not everybody enjoyed it all the time. I'm keen to hear more reactions - I may well bring it back another year and would like to make sure it's welcome (or, at least, not despised).

The main shortcomings of this year's version that I'd like to correct were :

  1. Inadequate audio quality, both in the sound clips and the equipment
  2. Should have been louder, but further away
  3. Not intuitive enough - it took a while to work out you could use it to tell the time

The ideal place to hear it (imho) was from Panravia. Up there, there was low background noise so it could be heard clearly but painlessly - it was possible to talk over it - but you didn't have to check your watch and strain your ears to hear it. It would be better still sited across the lake, but I'm not sure I can easily create enough volume for that.

Yeah we at Panravia liked it, we started to memorise certain hours by the sound, it was very useful as most of us had no watches and weren't bringing phones with us everywhere, so served its purpose.
Some sounds we could hear them but couldn't tell what they were exactly? Others were really obvious.
Glad to hear you can repurpose everything, always good to keep using things as much as you can.
Maybe if you did something similar again there could be multiple small speakers spread along the trees, or in a tree here and there in quieter areas? Probably a big pain, in practical terms, but just a thought.

Like nature sounds thunderstorms , big bangs and rain, thunders, waterfalls, wind blowing, sound of cracklings of burnt branches, timber, sea waves crashing on the shore. Maybe add a cruise ship sound to add human presence

The all arts performance project will require collaboration amongst different nestlers who would like to introduce various capacities within visual art, figurative art, music and sound installation

I would like to create a platform where all forms of arts come together. A project of resonance between visual, paintings, music and dance manifesting together in the same setting.

Hey @rosymaio maybe start a new thread for your proposal with a good description and title? Might get more eyes on it, as this thread is specifically about Adrian's sound project.

Rosy, I don't think you need a vote to start an artwork or performance idea. If you need people, their willingness to be involved is proof enough that its a good idea. If you need an art grant, apply for one.

(I'd have said this in your own thread but votes don't seem to offer the possibilities of comments!)

(ps I think your Outlook for IoS is inserting adverts in your postings. This alone is enough to put me off using it, even if my lack of IoS and hate of Outlook didn't already do that :)
