Idea: Per-user Activity Feed
About 5 times in the last 10 hours I've thought, "wow, this person makes a lot of great points; I wonder what else they've said, and I'd like a feed of new things they say as they're said."
Well, if each user had their own Activity page, or something like that, and not merely a list of the Groups said has joined/is Following, that'd do the trick!
Thoughts on other specifics?
I was thinking very much the same thing last night +1
A user's profile should contain an Activity feed

I usually agree with myself.
totally agree
Have wanted to use this more than once, and will most likely do so again.
I guess I kind of agree, but I have mixed feelings. I think that the act of following specific people can accentuate typical human tendencies towards groupthink and loyalties. However, any genuine consensus process subverts such tendencies.

An activity feed could help someone better understand another. This is a good thing.
This would be extremely useful
I quite like this idea... and also include statements of position on decisions.
I kind of agree. I think that this tool could be misused, but such is true of most tools.
Agreed but with the caveat that the feature shouldn't leak information from private groups -- That is, it should only reveal information that the querying user could otherwise access.
I like the idea
I like the idea
I think this could be really useful (and also conscious that we have lots of more fundamental feature development to do first)
@alandavison Okay, I've added a specific proposal :-)
Yes! A week or so ago I was looking for all of the comments that @carolinesmalley had made on a particular topic, that were part of many discussions, and had no way within Loomio to find them. The search did not give me anything.
Good idea .. often the comments of one member build a pattern of ideas. It helps also to organize own thoughts distributed here and there ..
@elimisteve To me it looks like profiles already have a list of groups that the person is a member of. Was there a change to the presentation of that information you would like?
As for a comments feed... I think the request exposes deficiencies in the search functions that are implemented so far. If there was a working way to search for all of a user's posts, then I assume it would be trivial to add a link to such a search to the profile page, and that would make sense to me.
@sirwumpus Seeing a list of comments a user has made -- Reddit-style (example) -- would be much more convenient than search, IMO.
This would also be useful for checking back on your own posts via your own profile page.
Maybe a discussion filter by user / for / against / abstain ...
That would allow me to see what a particular user was saying, or what other invested groups (supporters, those against, those undecided)
@gregorycassel Finding like-minded people to team up with is a really valuable part of Democracy-building, I think, and this seems like a great way to do that, no?
My typical use case for this would be when Loomio discussions (like most discussions, this is not a criticism of Loomio) wander from topic to topic, and often the same topic will come up in more than one discussion, often from the same people. I would like to spin off another discussion and find the previous related comments, which I can usually associate with a person, and then invite those people to the new discussion.
@bobhaugen Hmm, the ability to invite a user to a discussion sounds valuable... but I guess you could just @-mention them, which is basically as good because it gets their attention. Neeevermind.
@elimisteve - @-mention is good for getting peoples' attention, but I also want to find and link to their previous comments on the topic of the new discussion. That sets the stage for the new discussion, as in, people are already talking about this...
@bobhaugen Worry not -- I'm still in favor of per-user Activity Feeds :-). I was merely shooting down my own half-baked idea of discussion invitations.
In response to your question above, @elimisteve , I'm personally just as concerned about groupthink-- or the forceful exaggeration of 'likemindedness'-- as I am about the ability of people to organize and act effectively. That concern of mine, however, goes far beyond the bounds of this topic or proposal.
An activity feed for friends and admired thinkers could be genuinely helpful. I think it could also cause some subtle distortions, but I wouldn't stand in its way.
@gregorycassel
I think the pros far outweigh the cons. The potential to learn from - be inspired by - or see how much impact another user has on a group, topic or Loomio community as a whole is enormous.
I personally think I would become aware of many groups I would otherwise miss or overlook.
@alandavison Well said! Vote?
@elimisteve
I just did a rough Profile mockup as a visual to float the idea..
@alandavison Very nice! Would "Activity" include discussion comments and the joining of groups?
I think you're probably right in terms of the scalability of pros and cons here, @alandavison . As I mentioned in my neutral-to-slightly-positive abstention (haha), consensus process can subvert the coercive possibilities of personal loyalties or 'clannishness'. It just requires that groups really are using Loomio for genuinely participatory and inclusive decision-making.
@elimisteve
Would “Activity” include discussion comments and the joining of groups?
That would be my proposal, perhaps that tab could have section links to latest posts, all posts, voting for, voting against ....
@gregorycassel
All groups will have different dynamics, purposes and personalities. Many will go through early Group development stages (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing) I personally like to look at positive improvements to the Loomio interface and work on the principle that people are joining the right groups for the right reasons rather than presume the worst.
...also include statements of position on decisions.
Agreed, @alanna; great idea! What do you think, @alandavison?
@alandavison I think that sub-dividing further into -- "latest posts, all posts, voting for, voting against" -- is too much :-)
Yeah the profile page in Loomio right now is pretty markedly devoid of information. I'm not opposed to putting in some info there (especially 'discussions I've had with this person')
@sirwumpus A good point well made, if it was a comment instead of a "position" I could have liked it instead of replying.
@elimisteve I have worked on the Mockup a little more to see just how much could be included in the profile without being too cluttered on a mobile device. Also hope you don't mind me using your profile for the example :-)
This particular image shows how the Comments could be arranged in expanding sections ordered by Discussion with most recent at the top.
Also shows how the issue of Contact details could be handled simply and a simple badge honor / reward system.

Is it just me or does clicking on a person's Profile picture or @name not work in 1.0?
All the time I have been working on this I have been logged into Beta on the computer and evaluating angular on the smartphone.
that's correct - we haven't linked up the profile pictures yet. soon!
@richarddbartlett Thanks for clearing that up, also when I click on reply it bounces me back to Beta and images don't show up in comments like they do in Beta.
Latest mockup
@Grégoire Barrault I see that you abstained but haven't added any comments or posts. Would you care to expand on your reasoning. I dont see how this adds anything to the discussion but that might just be me and I have been known to be wrong as @gregorycassel can testify :-)
If I were to testify, @alandavison , I'd say that all individuals have frequently been wrong, and that's why we need real dialogue :)
Reddit is kind of like this; a user's "profile" page shows their Submissions and Comments.
