Spring : disaffiliation, closing projects and gathering

FB Fabio Balli Public Seen by 293

Self-organization in Sensorica does not seem to give great results. The lab always looks like a bric-a-brac and most projects seem half-dead.

We have knowledge, ideas, space and material, but no explicit leader to inspire the group with a clear vision on how we may have most impact in the community and how we may be sustainable.

Spring is an ideal time to free from superfluous and refocus energies in a meaningful purpose. Thus, I propose to

  • disaffiliate all people that have not registered nine hours or more in the VAS for the last three months
  • close all projects which have not received at least three hour in the VAS for the last three months
  • organize a gathering before the end of April to define a one year strategy and name an official leader

For the Lab to look like a real Canadian Academy of the Knowledge Economy we need to focus our speech around CAKE. Jim made a really nice CAKE website but ''we'' aren't promoting much CAKE. Instead we still talk about Sensorica. The Academy could get easy funding from Government but ''we''re putting more emphasis on Sensorica witch gets everyone confused. CAKE is an Academy and a Non Profit org. CAKE can get funded. Sensorica is an affiliation of individuals. When officials want to fund Sensorica they hit a dead end because they have to finance individuals, scattered across the globe, doing some good stuff in a mysterious way, in their free time... Please stop talking about Sensorica and leave it in the background. Keep talking about how Sensorica does stuff but please put CAKE forward, put the emphasis on CAKE.
CAKE, OK?
The Sensorica Network will benefit once the CAKE lab is a real FabLab / local Sensorica Hub.
We have a great story, great social value, but no funds to move forward because ''we'' stubbornly confuse people with Sensorica.
Please, understand this:
CAKE...
Thanks

We have a few projects to put on KickStarter.
Real nice projects with alot of good impact.
Funding on KickStarter can help us equip the Lab for many more exciting projects. It can help create full time jobs and grow the Lab exponentially. And make our place Famous.. great potential!
What happened to our excitement about KickStarter? Did we get sucked in some projects that are nowhere near as cool as KickStarter?
When we used to talk about KickStarter projects, people would light up with excitement, they wanted to join in with multimedia, talent, equipment,,, I confidently corelate the best times in Sensorica involvement with those times we wanted to launch KickStarter projects.
Lately, the Sensorica flame has been fading.
I think it's time to focus on KickStarter projects.
Did I say KickStarter?
KickStarter!

This would change the nature of the sensorica network in a fundamental way.

A meeting to define strategy I support but the other two proposals I do not think fit Sensorica philosophy.

Yannick already proposed weekly coordination meetings on Friday. The other proposals don't align with SENSORICA.

One and two are against Sensorica philosophy. May be after 1 or 2 years of inactivity, you could drop projects. Or maybe there should be a list of "inactive" projects....

Hey Fabio,
I think we need to go over the very essence of what SENSORICA is. I feel there are some misconceptions based on your proposals. I take part of it constructively, but the language you chose doesn't resonate well and skews the definition of what SENSORICA projects are.
As for the bric-a-brac in the lab, I agree that most people aren't picking up after themselves and we need better governance for that, but we are in the middle of renovations and the environment is noisy, dusty and messy.
I highly praise what we are building here, a community funded space with very little budget, with contributions from many individuals. This is not some big money funded space like D3 or Notman House. The end result will be what we build together, and if these values resonate with anyone, I suggest they jump aboard and ride the train to self sustainability.
