HACKNEY CAN: We've begun, now how do we develop?

TAU The Alternative UK Public Seen by 43

A small group has been thinking about a Hackney CAN for a couple of months now. Initiated by Anton C it's begun with thinking about a physical place to centre it so that there is a source of income, but also kick-starts a new idea about cosmo-local economy. Here's a link to Anton's Circular Economy Incubator in Dalston - https://www.circularuk.com/. But while we don't have a building to get going with, what other ways can we begin the process? There's a number of starting ideas in the slide share here: https://www.thealternative.org.uk/citizens-action-network.

The strategy we are developing for Circular UK is based on re-inventing the co-working / office industry in London. Most of the flexible coworking operators such as WeWork, Spaces, The Office Group, SecondHome, WorkLife, Huckletree, etc are overpriced, especially for companies that require their own private meeting space and meeting rooms. Our approach is to offer these companies a much better value private office that can transform in the evenings and weekends into a dynamic event space and entrepreneurial community centre. My designing offices that can adapt to multiple uses throughout the week we can create more value for everyone. And that's where Hackney CAN comes in. Can we create a programme of events that take place on evenings and weekends that can engage local people in sustainable innovation and action? How to we connect neighbours of all ages and inspire collective action? Why can't the empty office become a community asset or resource? What if the space itself was managed cooperatively?

The name we use to describe our multi-use office spaces is House of Transformation (HOT for short). Here is a website link www.hothackney.com. We have looked at possible spaces in Dalston and Mare Street, but they were a bit too big and expensive for us. Now we are exploring a very exciting space in Hoxton and hope to lease and launch after the CoronaChaos is over.

For now we will be creating designs, publishing a whitepaper and hosting lots of Zoom calls to build our community of members and programme of events. Hopefully we can have a conversation here about what events a Hackney CAN could host in our space and what possible projects could emerge from those events.

What can be done during the CoronaChaos? is there some way to tune into the self-organising going on in the area? Are there networks currently being set up, people building trust? These are the prerequisites to a successful CAN..

Anton I would love to chat with you about the Hackney CAN - I'm writing a thesis on 'networking the urban commons' in London, and I'm trying to connect to the city's projects at the leading edges, this sounds like the perfect project for me to sink my analytical teeth into!! Would be great to hear from you - either via Loomio or if not please feel free to reach out directly via [email protected] :) Best of luck with the project!
