Select Committee for Format/Structure of WHBPCVII

ST Sam TIM Public Seen by 177

As previously discussed, Timaru is keen to work with AHBPA to put on the best worlds ever. The best way to make that happen is where possible, jobs are shared to people with the skills and time for said job.

First of these is format and days. The best people to do this are those who have been to multiple worlds. I would like to take suggestions from AHPBA on which individual/s from each of the 4 most established polo scenes would be best to be on a committee to discuss, socialise, then decide on the format. (Sub-committee members DO NOT need to be on the Jedi Council)

The reps from Perth, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane will be joined by one from Timaru and two international reps; NAH & EHPA (TBC)

This will be their brief:
- Finals format
- Wild card format
- numbers of teams and allocation of spots
- recommendation of when satellite tourneys could be

We've given a date of 1 March for us to give an update on this. We don't need to have finalised everything by then but we should have made progress.

My first question that is vitally important for whoever is involved in the above discussion is how many courts will there be? That will define the maximum limit for the tourney attendance.

The bud said 5 courts and that is the plan. However if the wise format committee make a format where 4 courts works fine then there would be benefits of going 4.
Benefits at a local level include cost, and space for player/ audience movement.
At an organisational level, 4 less refs per game to organise

Brook has now been appointed to led this. Here is the gist of his brief:
Tournament Planner
- Discuss dates for the tournament with national & international bodies/parties and report back with options for final decision
- Discuss with NAH, EU and AHBPA on format, number of teams, play schedule.
- Discuss with AHBPA clubs on satellite tournies such as female only tournie in Brisbane or between wild card & finals. Carefully planned so internationals travellers don't have to criss-cross continent
- Facilitate/lead decision making process of format and days for wild card and finals etc

This is the most up to date info on what is the current status of allocations and formats. NAH approve and also EU do in principle, although they aren't as good at getting back to us with feedback as NAH was. Currently Sam is reviewing this and going to get back to me with any questions and queries but there isn't much that is different from last time he reviewed it and NAH didn't ask for changes since. Have a read and let me know your thoughts.

Timaru Hardcourt Bike Polo and the AHBPA is pleased to announce the allocations and format for the WHBPC VII.

WHBPC VII FINALS:
3 days, 4 courts, 48 teams

WHBPC VII FINALS ALLOCATIONS:
1 CURRENT WORLD CHAMPIONS
12 EU
12 NAH
8 WILDCARD
4 AUSTRALIA
3 JAPAN
2 NEW ZEALAND
1 TAIWAN
1 AFRICA
1 CENTRAL AMERICA
1 SOUTH AMERICA
1 MALAYSIA
1 CHINA

If a spot is not claimed, then the following distributions will apply: Wildcard 2, Aus 1, NZ 1, Jap 1, NAH 1, EU 1 then any further spots at the discretion of the organisers.

The World Championship VII Finals Format: Please note that the format of the tournament may change once we have feedback and results of an alternative game play format being devised by Andrew Hayworth. This is currently being trialed in the coming months at a number of tournaments around the world. We will lock in the format more than 6 months prior to the event. Our proposed structure at this stage is as follows:

Day 1 - 2 seeded groups of 24 teams. 5 Swiss rounds to determine rank. Over 4 courts this is only 3 games per round and an average of 2 game wait between each team's games.

Day 2 - The ranking from day 1 is used to seed 2 even groups of 24 teams and a further 5 games of Swiss rounds is played to determine final rank. Points and results are carried over from day 1 to day 2.

Day 3 - The top 24 teams (12 from each group) is placed into a double elimination system to determine the top 2 teams which then play in a grand final.

The Wildcard: 2 days, 4 courts, team allocations and format TBA.

World Cup "Best of the Rest" Tournament: 1 day tournament to be held on the day between the Wildcard and World Champ Finals for teams not in the World Champ Finals only. No rounds, no seeding, no refs, alternative rules, just good ol' fashion roulette of a single elimination.

Dates, starting February 1st, 2016:
Monday: Wildcard Tournament day 1
Tuesday: Wildcard Tournament day 2
Wednesday: “Best of the rest” Tournament (rest day)
Thursday: WHBPC VII Finals Tournament day 1
Friday: WHBPC VII Finals Tournament day 2
Saturday: WHBPC VII Finals Tournament day 3

@samcallander
As there's no comments/feedback Sam I think it'll be fine to go with for now. Thoughts?

ST

Sam TIM Mon 30 Mar 2015 10:54AM

I will go global with it this week as the preliminary format. If there are no major objections we can lock it in.
Thanks brook and those who have their input.
