Group-based color coding on the home page
When a user logs in, they are presented with recent activity in all their groups. Users should be able to assign colors to each group via the list on the right hand side (gmail label/google calendar style) so that messages can be more easily scanned.
I like that a lot! What do you think @jonlemmon?
Hmm yeah, I can imagine it getting pretty intense. Definitely hearing that people want to manage their content ways similar to email (hiding, favoring, grouping, personalizing).
Interesting!
It's definitely a pain distinguishing between discussions in different groups.
The question is if colors is the best way to solve that pain. Could be. On the other hand, once we go discussion-centric (i.e. discussions that live outside of groups), and you start participating in lots of discussions outside of your normal groups, I think this solution might break down.
So I'm thinking that providing a really easy way to filter discussions might be a better solution.
Or perhaps giving groups an image and displaying that to the left of the discussions (and if the discussion doesn't have any groups associated then displaying the avatar of the author and participants. Similar to Facebook or Gmail.
I feel like this is aligned with our intention to be able to star things or follow things.
in practice in gmail, i have a few key labels for filters that are high high priority. So i think it would be less a psychedelic rainbow and more like a few highlighted thingywops
I'm a member of about 50 groups!! I think this would quickly turn pretty psychedelic on my dashboard. If you have lots of groups and you want to keep them straight, I'd recommend using inbox, which already breaks up content by group.
