Loomio

Invitation Flow doesn't work well.

Hey everyone, I've been using Loomio for a couple of months now, and one of the issue that it has is the invitation flow.

The way it works now:

1 User follows a Url
2 Requests to Join
3 Join request is sent to group
4 Join is approved
5 An invitation Link is sen
6 User creates an account
7 User is part of the group

Many users don't get past step 5.. Probably because they do not notice the invitation link, and don't know to look for it.

What would work better:

1 User follows an Url
2 Requests to join
3 User creates an account now
4 User confirms email address
5 Join request is sent to group
6 Join is approved
7 User is part of the group

This would work much better, as the user would expect to confirm their email as part of the account creation process, prior to there request to join being finished.

Currently my group has 20 unused invitations, all from users that requested to join, but then never clicked the invitation link that they received, probably because they didn't expect or notice it.

Yeah I think we need to get to the invitation flow revamp sooner rather than later, because I really want to get the users/sign_up and invite to group flow into the app before we start letting a ton of people about all the cool new stuff we've been building.

I think my thinking is similar to yours, with the minor difference being that the user enters / confirms an email address when they request to join, but they don't create a password until they log in for the first time (IE, after after they've been accepted to join the group)

This means that we're only asking for information we really need when we need it, rather than feeling like you have to do work in order to get in (It's amazing how much work creating an account feels like to a user).

Also, there's the school of thought that's like "Passwords? We don't need no stinking passwords!", where when you're notified of acceptance to the group you get a magic sign-in link, and you can request another one (or authenticate with a provider) if you need to sign in again.

I'm going to try to convince @robertguthrie that we need this quite soon :)

That sounds good to me. As I understand it.. we change it so users must create a loomio account in order to request to join a group. And we implement magic login links and push passwords a little further away in the UX.

One thing I want to preserve, when we do work in this area, is that an account is not created when you invite someone to join a group. Because it's too often that people invite people who already have accounts, and they end up with two and no way to merge them. So I think we got the invitation link is a token, not an account, correct.
