The 70s commons Plan that came from the bottom up - Lucas Aerospace workers

M mike_hales Public Seen by 133

In the 70s, workers at Lucas Aerospace developed a swords-to-ploughshares corporate plan with strong green orientation, grounded in a fundamental sense of the cultural commons of their own skilled labour power as designers, makers and technicians, and needs in the commons of Planet and human community. The plan was mentioned in social.coop earlier this week. Below are some links from that thread.

Last year UK film maker Steve Sprung released a film on The Plan: a lovely, moving, meditative, passionate (long!) film which manifests the quiet but passionate and compassionate intelligence of the union-organised workforce. It is available for download and streaming - links below.

neil: In 1976 the Lucas Plan from Lucas Aerospace was outlined by workers - a strategy to avoid job losses by transitioning to production of things useful to society. Some of those things were heat pumps, solar cell technology, wind turbines and fuel cell technology.

"The proposals were rejected out of hand by L.A. management"

Could have been a mini green new deal in 1976...

@mike_hales There's a wonderful, ruminative (long) movie: The plan that came from the bottom up, by Steve Sprung. Screened a year ago at ICA London https://www.ica.art/films/plan-came-bottom

It's hard to find info on the movie and how to view it. This page on the 'Lucas Plan' site is vacuous http://lucasplan.org.uk/the-plan-film/

I have email for Steve if you'd like to contact? Would be glad to know more myself, on availability. And success?

neil: Looks like you can download a 30 minute version here: http://theplandocumentary.com/download/ but as for the full version, seems like you'd need to organise a screening somewhere..

neil: Thanks for sharing this, I really want to watch it. It seems like it would be a great companion film to Nae Pasaran, one of my favourite films recently... https://naepasaran.com/ we have a lot to learn from workers of previous generations and the documentary format is a wonderful way of doing it.

I had a problem yesterday with the download link for the 30min cut, but streamed it successfully. It gives a good sense of the full version. At this moment, the Part 1 file above seems to be downloading OK for me.

Steve Sprung is scheduling a UK tour in the New Year, with speakers. I can DM his email contact if needed. I hope to organise a local screening of the film in my city.

In case of download problems, Steve Sprung has provided another download link, for smaller (lower quality) versions of the movie files
