Voting on comments
I would be a good idea if you were able to vote on comments of a proposed idea. Also, that the comments can be linked to a part of the proposal. Such that if you click on the link in the proposal it sorts the comments (by vote) to that part of the proposal.
Yes, I think Reddit has an effective method of sorting comments. I really like how you can sort comments based on newest or most votes.
And yeah, I'm thinking of how a proposal may consist of more than one part and that part may need more voting in of itself. As in city council meetings where an amendment is made to a part of an overall law. I think it would sort the comments such that part a, subsection b are there, but not the comments for all the other areas.
A while back we threw together a 'reactions' feature (like slack reactions); one of the potentially interesting use cases of that would be an informal voting system on individual comments.
I didn't have thoughts at the time towards having them affect the appearance or sorting of the interface, but rather being a mini-temperature check for individual ideas / arguments (oh okay, there's lots of support for that idea, even if no one's responding to it directly)
This also strikes me as falling into the larger 'how do we encourage iterating proposals effectively' question.
Maybe an easy win could be "sort comments by likes"
Yes, that would be one of many other sort options. In general, since the proposals are static, it would appropriate for there to be a process for making decisions. For instance, your comment received a lot of likes and it should be turned into a proposal in this thread, then that proposal advanced to another area and receive a vote from the general community. A similar process to that of committees in a city council.
Just stopped to support this idea, cool one.
ok I see
It has been a while since I contributed but this was discussed over a year ago in relation to the Large Scale Democracy thread and I remembered @jameskiesel 's name from that or a related discussion.
One of the things we discussed was that a comment, or paragraph(s) within a comment could have a relationship to the "Title" of the discussion, or the proposal(s) arising from the discussion. We discussed several relationships or interactions such as:
Supports, Against, Not Related, Fork to new discussion ....
The idea being that it would be possible to filter comments / paragraphs / individual points into meaningful summaries such as For / Against / etc. and allow long discussions that do spawn some useful ideas for further discussion to move forward and preferably link forward and backward between discussions.
If I can find the discussion I will link it.
Cool ideas @jeremyentwistle1 ! Can you explain more about how you see it working? I'm having trouble visualising how it would be designed. Would it be like upvoting/downvoting on Reddit? Maybe you could draw the thing you described about comments being linked to a specific part of a proposal, so I could get a sense for it?
