Tabling at March for Our Lives?

BG Ben Galewsky Public Seen by 291

Hi all,

CU-SURJ is going to have a table at the march saturday.

Does RJI/SAC want to coordinate on this? I know its main focus for service is congregants, BUT I think it would be good PR for people to see UU's commitment to social justice. It's a unique aspect of the congregation.

Coordination could look like bringing some info about UU/SAC/RJI, helping set up, helping tear down, etc. and of course, having a person be at the table from during the last part of the event (4:30/5 to 5:30)

Be well,
Beth

Ok, but who will ask about use of the Douglas center?

Weather is so dicey, today. If someone wants to bring pamphlets incase we are allowed to set up in Douglass center that'd be cool by me.

Hi all,

I struggle with the fact that SURJ is an intentionally all white group. I know that there are good intentions but I really don't feel good associating myself with CU-SURJ nor do I feel that tabling alongside them makes us show we are standing for justice. I worry that instead it makes our whole organization more uninviting to anyone who isn't white.

This is not meant to criticize anyone in those groups.

Thanks to all who do good work
Ben

Hi all,

Oh boy! Misunderstanding, wow!

To clarify an important point, SURJ is NOT at all an intentionally all white group, either at the local or national level.
It targets white people as a resource to mobilize, but neither its membership nor leadership is all white.

I'd be glad to talk about this with anyone who's interested. That Ben (and potentially others) had this understanding is a mark that we need to be more clear in our messaging- I really appreciate getting that perspective!

Be well,
Beth
