TTIP talk on 13th July

GW George Walker Public Seen by 169

At the meeting yesterday we agreed to try and hold a talk on Monday 13th July following on from our action at the weekend. The plan is to try and book the Rose Bowl at 7pm and get a range of speakers to talk about TTIP.

We need to try and contact some groups/individuals we think may be interested in speaking. It was suggested that possibilities could be:

Political parties opposed to TTIP- Green Party, Alliance for Green Socialism, TUSC etc.
Keep Our NHS Public
Trade Unions
Academics opposed to TTIP
Any MPs/councillors locally who oppose TTIP
Global Justice Now

Does anyone have any more suggestions of groups or specific individuals we should contact?

I've emailed Leeds Keep Our NHS Public about providing a speaker on 13th July, will let everyone know if I get a response.

Dear all,

Leeds Against TTIP held a planning meeting on Tuesday to discuss future action against TTIP in the Leeds area. Following that meeting we are now planning to hold an action day on either Saturday 11th or Sunday 12th July, which is likely to include leafleting at Leeds Train station in the morning and a creative direct action during the day in the centre of Leeds.

Following on from this, we are planning to book a room at the Rose Bowl on Monday 13th July at 7pm to hold a public meeting informing people about TTIP and its implications. We are currently in the process of trying to find potential speakers for this and I was wondering if Leeds KONP would be interested in providing a speaker for this event, perhaps to speak specifically about the affect TTIP will have on the future of the NHS?

We are holding a further planning meeting next week which you are invited to attend and which I will provide details of when these are confirmed. At this meeting we will be finalising the arrangements for our action day and public meeting.

I hope you are able to support us and look forward to being able to work with you in future.

Kind Regards,

George Walker

Unfortunately we are unable to book the Rose Bowl for free over the summer and it seems that the cost of hiring it will be beyond our budget.

It has been suggested that other possible venues could be:
1.LUU
2.Leeds City Museum
3.Carriageworks
4.Town Hall

You can put in online room enquiries for LUU at http://www.spaceinleeds.com/contact or email them [email protected] or call 0113 3801 388. I'll put in an enquiry now if people want to do that.

How many people do you think we need capacity for- 200? I also assume we won't need catering at the event? Also should hiring a room in the Union be free for students? If so I will mention in the enquiry that we are mainly students at the university.

Would seem a good idea to investigate the other options soon including LUU - I don't know if it would be free for students.
Capacity of 200 should be enough, I would have thought.
No, I don't think we need catering.

Okay, I'll try and get a quote from LUU. A recommendation that was made to me at the leeds peoples assembly meeting was the swarthmore centre in Woodhouse Square. They have a hall that can hold about 120 and they only charge around £30/hour so would be well within budget. What do people think?

Also I spoke to Steve Johnston who is on Leeds Trades Council and he seemed to think that they may well be interested in providing a speaker.

I'll chase up with them about getting a potential trade union speaker but we are probably best off sorting out the venue before contacting anymore potential speakers formally.

Just an update on where we are up to. We have booked the Swarthmore Centre in Woodhouse Square from 7-9pm on Monday 13th July for £18.50/hour. We have so far secured Gavin Andrews, Leeds Green Party's Campaigns Officer; Guy Taylor from Global Justice and Dr John Puntis to speak about the NHS. The event is up on Eventbrite here http://www.eventbrite.com/e/ttip-in-the-spotlight-talk-question-time-tickets-17638294614

I have contacted Sam Lowe from FoE asking if he is able to make it and am waiting for a response. Would Alliance for Green Socialism be able to provide a speaker? If anyone else has any suggestions of potential speakers just say

You could also try a guy called John who is the regional coordinator for Unite Community. He can be contacted at the Unite office on Call lane.

Yeah that would be great Max, we were wanting to get a trade union speaker. Is it John Coan you are thinking of? If so I will drop him an email
