Conference abstracts

VV Victor Venema Public Seen by 266

Just an idea.

Would it be a nice feature if people could make a moderated page with a collection of preprints? Then conferences could upload their extended abstracts to EarthArXiv and quickly generate a list with conference contributions, rather than code such a page on their isolated conference page.

Hi Victor - Sorry, but I don't quite get what you mean by this. Mind elaborating a bit?

Some conferences publish extended abstracts for (some of) their presentations. At least for the conferences I go to these extended abstracts are normally just bundled in a book of abstracts (with the status of a report) and are not reviewed that well that they are considered peer reviewed. (Some conferences do officially publish extended abstracts in a (low-prestige) journal.)

It would be nice to have these extended abstracts in our repository, to archive them for the long run and make them more accessible. Thus it would be nice if conference organisers would ask their participants to upload their manuscripts to EarthArXiv (or OSF in general), rather than upload them to the conference page and publish them there.

We will likely only be able to convince conference organisers to do so if we make it easy for them to link to or create a page where all abstracts are listed (and sorted).

I was looking for feedback whether this is a potentially valuable feature for archives and for the spread of open access content. If people think it is interesting we can suggest it to the OSF. @mattspitzer

Thanks, Victor! Much clearer now!

This sounds like a pretty good idea to me; abstracts, especially extended abstracts, can contain some useful information, data, and ideas, and can at the very least point you in the direction of folks working on topics of interest.

There may be a way to do this now. OSF offers OSF Meetings (cos.io/meetings) which is a light weight conference materials service. It easily collects submissions by email (or adding a tag to an existing OSF project) under a branded banner of the conference, including date/location info. These projects could also be used to submit to EarthArXiv using the "Use an existing OSF Project" option. The meeting deposit and the preprint would point to the same OSF object.

That was what I was thinking of (and more). Wonderful. Will use this in future.
