New commissions/memberships system for Brussels Together ASBL

J JF Public Seen by 465

Hi all!

It's been a while that we are thinking to redefine our fiscal sponsorship fees for BT ASBL.

After collecting many feedbacks from the collectives administrators, the people willing to use the platform and the team developing the network on a daily basis, we came up with the idea to switch our system in this way:

  • Charge 5% commission for the budget of the ASBL on wire payments
  • Charge 5% commission for Open Collective when raising money online
  • A monthly subscription of 10€/month for each collective joining the platform

Please let us know your opinion on this. We need as many feedbacks as possible in order to make the ASBL sustainable in the long run!

Thanks!

JF

Hi JF,
Could you explain the difference between 5% on wire payments and 5% on raising money online? You mean for the first one on payments we make?
Otherwise it seems reasonable.
Rgds,
Vincent

I guess he meant 5% flat fee regardless on all the money in regardless of the payment method to keep things simple. If it’s a wire, there is no platform fee for open collective. If it’s a credit card, then it goes through the platform and there is a 5% fee (in that case BT would only make money on the monthly membership fee)

For the €10/month, should we create at least another tier for larger collectives (e.g. €100/month for collectives with at least €10k/year budget - by comparison if they had to pay for their own accountant they would have to pay €2-3k/year - also https://opencollective.com/becoworking offers two different pricing depending on the size of the coworking )? Or do you want to keep it simple at the beginning? (We can always change it in the future)

For me it's ok, as long as the amounts of money the collectives will handle are low it seems fair. Once they will grow bigger, I guess they won't need us anymore to do the accounting and will leave...which will be a good thing because it means they thrive!

  1. I think that no matter what, we need to take a decision and move on.
  2. Personally, and talking to other people like Nadine from Code & Play and Rosie from Global Shapers Brussels, I think it makes more sense to do €10/month and then free (excluding credit card fees and open collective fees for online payment through the platform, but that's the same as KickStarter/EventBrite and collectives don't have to use that feature if they don't want to). And then, we should split the work (managing expense/accounting/...) or hire someone to do it and split the cost. But at least that way it's bottom up and people understand that they are saving money by pooling together all those common costs that they would have had to cover anyway if they were going alone on their own.

Djeeez, it has already been 4 months! What about we make this happen starting March 1 2018?
We will only require core contributors (admins) to be members of the BrusselsTogether Collective (https://opencollective.com/brusselstogether) for minimum €10/month to create a collective. And we will drop the host fees (so free for wires, and 5% + credit card fees for credit card payments). We can always reevaluate in 6 months.
FYI and for reference, here are the total of the host fees in 2017: https://d.pr/free/i/A64di5
We made €2,630, mainly thanks to the Civic Innovation Network (€2,029). I think it's only fair to ask them what they would like to do with the money (in a way that can benefit all collectives). We should just keep aside €1,000-€1,500 for accounting -- still waiting for the final number once our accountant will file the report for 2017, I'll keep you posted)

Best solution imo :)

Hi,
As I said on Slack:
I think 10$/month is a much better pricing model than 5% additionnal fee so great idea!

However, UX-wise I think it's not logical to pay more if there are more core contributors imho (it will lead to have max 1 core contributor i guess) and i find weird to pay for the collective with the core contributor personal money. I'd be more logical that the opencollective profile becomes a member of BrusselsTogether as an organization > more clarity + possibility to pay with the OC available budget + possibility to give more if the collective wants to increase its support if it can?
