New Discussion Tool: "Fist to Five Poll"

Matt Noyes PublicSeen by 75

The existing Discussion tools include
"Proposal, seek collective agreement" and
"Poll, measure popularity or offer a choice."
This is ambiguous, especially if people use Poll for consent/consensus decision-making. Why not modify Poll and add it to the list as an additional "Fist to Five" tool?

Add a new Decision tool

In the Decision tools menu, add "Fist to Five, for consensus decision-making" with pre-populated options (as listed in this poll). (Preferably with little hand icons)
New Menu:
Proposal
[where you can choose from a set of process templates to make a group decision.]
Consensus
Consent
Advice
Fist to five
Poll
measure opinion/interest with some well known tools
Choose (single or multiple choice)
Rank
Score (see score voting)
Spend (previously dot vote)
Time

Yes! I support this proposal.

Not sure I can do more at this point than talk... (not my job to tinker with settings ;-)

Robert Guthrie

I have a concern about this.

It's not quite the way forward but good idea.

Robert Guthrie

I like the suggestion and I'd like to add support for it as a proposal process template.

My intention is that we reduce the number of top level facilitation tool options, and provide more flexibility at the next level.

So we have something like
- Proposal
where you can choose from a set of process templates to make a group decision.
- Consensus
- Consent
- Advice
- Fist of five
- Poll
measure opinion/interest with some well known tools
- Choose (single or multiple choice)
- Rank
- Score (see score voting)
- Spend (previously dot vote)
- Time

And in the future we may have RSVP so we put Time poll and that together under Event or Meeting.

We also want to merge the left and right columns, so at the bottom of the thread you see Comment, Proposal, Poll as ways to take an action on the thread.

I don't think Fist of Five is the right process choice for this but it's nice to see it look so good using the poll tool, and thanks for bringing it up.

Great -- that makes sense. Not sure why you need Fist to Five if you have consensus? Also it seems good to include a simple Yes, No, Abstain vote template.

Robert Guthrie

Sorry I'm confused. Proposal right now is "consensus", why do you ask for fist of 5 then? Maybe we think of consensus differently?

Luke Flegg

In case helpful: for me there is a clear distinction between consensus and consent, though there are nuanced variations of each of course (especially consent).
Consensus: Everyone must actively agree. Quorum is usually everyone.
Consent: Absence of (qualified) objections. My favourite method is S3 (a qualifying objection is one where you believe the proposal in its current form is more likely than not to harm the organisation/ sabotage it's vision. Or, you have an actionable idea how to improve on the proposal right now)

Robert Guthrie

Looking forward to meeting you at in Mieres. We'll get to chat about this stuff in person!

Louis Parisot

IMHO, the “Fist of 5” is for confidence (or rating) vote, not for consensus.

A generic rating vote (e.g. “Vote 0 to N out of N” where N is customizable ) could be useful.

Matt Noyes

My mistake -- I did not notice the block option on Proposal, so I took it to be a voting tool, not a consensus tool. I am confused, too, though: I learned Fist to Five (aka fist of five) as a consensus technique, useful because it is more granular and gives info that "no objections" or voting does not. In any case, my desire would be to have it as an option, because of its specific advantages.

Matt Noyes

Actually, Robert's proposed scheme above seems great.

Matt Noyes

(By the way - doesn't Fist TO Five make more sense? As a range of options? Fist of five is a tautology...?)

Matt Noyes

I revised the proposal, but there is no indication of that?

Robert Guthrie

it's nested under the started poll event item up top.

Matt Noyes

Missed it - thanks.

Luke Flegg

Every time people have been writing "fist to five" throughout this thread, have you been meaning to write "FIRST to five"? Because I've been very confused about fists! 🤔
