Looking for information/ experience of efforts to integrate self employed freelancers into co-operatives

I'm working with a multistakeholder co-op which uses freelancers on a regular basis to increase capacity. They are looking to integrate them into the co-op, but without threatening their self employed status. Specifically: If my client opts to create a new class of member to include freelancers in their meetings and systems, what do they need to be aware of in terms of not undermining the self-employed status of the individual freelancers? I'm aware that they cannot be appointed directors. I'd be interested to chat with anyone with experience of this issue? Many thanks.

That's interesting, I didn't know there was a problem with their being appointed as directors. At Cetis LLP we simply have a rather loose category of associates, who share in the information flow but not in any formalities, and certainly not in the profit-sharing scheme. That seems to work fine. But obviously you will need a core of directors, and I'd be interested to know what exactly the incompatibilities are between being a director and being self-employed.
