We're thinking about building a Docker Container
There is this amazing new application container format for distributing applications. It's called Docker.
It should make it really easy to install Loomio on your own servers.
Would you people out there be interested in this as a way to run Loomio without the installation pain?
Check out www.docker.io and let me know If I should make a Loomio docker file.
Any progress on this @robertguthrie ? Having now used one with another application I am most impressed.
@neilmorris as part of the crowdfunding campaign we committed to having a Docker available by November at the latest. Wheee!
I'm drafting a roadmap. We stand to save a bunch of money, reduce support overhead and increase community participation in QA by getting docker done first.
Roadmap not final yet though.
As a dev who only knows enough to get myself in trouble I really like this idea and it would get me much more excited about supporting and using loomio. Discourse.org shows a great path to follow in this regard with their "install in under 30 minutes" recipe which uses docker. http://blog.discourse.org/2014/04/install-discourse-in-under-30-minutes/
I would also be very happy with a docker installation, as soon as possible. I've been struggling for days with getting a production server up.
@robertguthrie This sounds like a great idea. Status?
Hi @elimisteve. The loomio wiki has an up to date installation guide.
A single 'docker container' in practice is not quite so easy to do, there is a bunch of configuration that does not fit nicely into a prebuilt container - So I've documented how to setup a heroku like system in as few steps as possible, this gives you the ability to easily deploy updates and your own changes and configuration and is based on top of Docker.
Setting up a complete Loomio install involves more than one service/contatiner, and more stuff that just running services.
There is a lot of DNS configuration that you must do for yourself, you'll need to setup SMTP, inbound email, websocket pubsub, backup, 3rd party API keys, SSL certificates and so on..
This is all documented in the wiki. and I've precompiled docker containers for SMTP, reply by email, and coming soon the websocket publish subscribe system.
Please check it out and let me know how you go. I've tried to get it down to as few steps as possible, and I'd love your feedback.
@robertguthrie
Dan and I are toying with docker right now. How can we help?
PS:
Loomio is fantastic!
@jacobgadikian thanks and thanks!
In terms of the Docker stuff.. I'm looking for general feedback on how you find the exiting documentation, and any contributions in terms of finalising setup.
There are 2 things I'm a bit behind on.. I think I'll have a go at them today:
We have a pull request finished which separates loomio the organisation from loomio the app. Making it easier for people running loomio to distinguish themselves from us. I need to merge that in and update the docs.
The new angular interface requires another service (websocket server, for live updates) which is not yet documented. It's another docker container, so once you know the config vars for your situation it's just another command line on your host.
Sorry-- I am kind of off-track, I think; I haven't been able to find the documentation. Did you take the github dockerfile down? Google shows it in results for the query loomio docker, but when I go to it, it 404's.
Thanks!
-Jake
Documentation is here:

@jacobgadikian please let me know how the documentation works for you, I'm super keen to hear feedback about your experience - is it what you need to know?
Robert, is there a section on docker at the moment, or have we killed the once-existing dockerfile for now? If there's no dockerfile at the moment, I'm going to follow the steps in those directions and try & dockerize :).
Just a brief update at the moment-- GCE is being a bear, as it often likes to do. Causing issues with the SSH key for dokku. All that said, I now get that dokku is docker++ and the sort of lightweight deploy system I was looking for for this and other projects. I don't think that the fault is with your install system, which seems like it'd be just about effortless on Digital ocean-- I think it's just GCE doing it's odd "well we couldn't just make it normal, now could we...."
Heading to sleep now-- quick question though: Can Loomio do multisite? And... to get real specific about it, I'm talking about, well, a list of about 500 domains-- each with their own segregated Loomio.
(that 500-site question isn't urgent but is the endgame of one of my projects at the moment)
If by "multisite" you mean single loomio install, subdomain per group, then yes.
I don't know what GCE is sorry.
GCE == Google Compute Engine, Google's answer to EC2 (IaaS).
Yes thats correct. Sorry I missed that. @robertguthrie, right now I'm unable to work on the docker due to getting Dawn's cute little Fenix (fenixer.org) off the ground. It will probably be a month.... Sorry bout that.
Single domain install sub domain per group works for my purposes. Thanks!
This sounds a very logical development.
