Should we cap membership at 500?
If not I think we need to run the club more like a business as it's too much work for a small group of volunteers.

I don't want the club to be commercial, prefer a community.

I would worry that we get the wrong 500 and prevent a potential asset from joining. Prefer the idea that we get more people spreading the work. I think we could use the new member joining opportunity to get them doing something straightaway?

Would having a limit make the club more cliquey than people already think it is? And from an external point of view think it would also reinforce the old view of the Wheelers being elitist. Maybe we should speak to a club like Ilkley which has a HUGE membership and see what they do?

I'm not sure I actually want to limit it but interesting way to debate and make a decision. Be good to see everyone vote and then decide what to do. First the wheelers, then the general elections ;)

Ruth - I think the clique situation gets worse as the size of the group gets bigger rather than smaller. Some research shows that 150 is the ideal max - although I've not read into it extensively & it's probably subject to small print etc http://netwar.wordpress.com/2007/08/25/dunbars-number/
Finding out about Ilkley is a good idea. Do you have a contact there? Would be interesting to know what members pay and how many are involved with running it.

I think we ought to limit it to less than 500. I think 250 would be more than enough. I have some ideas about how to implement a cap and exceptions for women (until we reach 50 50) if anyone's interested.
