Should Hackland provide temporary accommodation for members? Closed Sun 3 Mar 2019 9:02PM
So it appears that 9 people voted to not allow people to stay the night at Hackland. And perhaps this should be the immediate outcome. 5 and 4 people interested in allowing emergency accommodation and using this as a potential income source respectively. Let's continue this discussion and look at other possible options (like maybe if people agree we could build an Airbnb that we use to fund Hackland).
We have had several people talk about this on Slack so far and I believe we have had multiple stay at Hackland now. Let's talk about it.

I'm between "No" and "Yes, but only in an emergency" but for members only. There could be legal issues with "Yes. No limits", since it's the commercial side of the building. I've read about this occurring in other maker spaces overseas and it became an ongoing issue. The issue I have is that you are expected to be quite while others are sleeping/resting, even if that's not the official case.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that would feel uncomfortable if there were people sleeping/living in the space.

I think that the decision to let people stay here, even in the case of emergency accommodation could open the floodgates to staying for longer or having more frequent "emergencies". But, in the case where we as a collective agree on this then I absolutely think that people staying should absolutely chip in to help keep hackland afloat (it doesn't have to be hostel prices, but definitely more than a standard membership fee).

I would even say 1 night (maybe specified in a timeframe like 1 month or 3 months?) in an emergency. It’s a weird social situation with running into people asleep etc. and agree with what Simon says on most people wanting to be respectful with sleeping people. That’s really not the point of a hackspace, people should feel welcome to work and tinker there and it should feel like everyone‘s shared space.

Edit: Reading Jono‘s response it might be easier to outright rule it out. An exception to the rule might be better

Not what a hackspace is for. I'm keen on helping setup a pod hostel somewhere else tho. If people do "fall asleep while working" overnight they should provide a koha. We shouldn't make a bed.

How long people can stay should relate to their specific circumstances, and how much room we have. If there is a lot of consistent demand, why not start Hackland Hostel?

Sorry, but having people asleep/living in the space isn't ideal from a tool library perspective. There was someone asleep in the storage space today (during "business" hours), didn't want to wake them, and would certainly feel a bit weird showing potential members around when there's a dude coma'd out to space videos.
