IRC improvement

RJ Raphaël Jadot Public Seen by 476

Hello, this is a topic for discussion about improving IRC channels.

  • We have added a new meetbot called chwido, like our dog mascot, who will help managing meetings inside IRC. Will be documented soon in our IRC :)
  • We'll create a workshop channel, and the com channel will redirect to it.

Other stuff needs to be done, but we would like your advice first.

I feel that this might not a good thing in all ways. Although we know what OM means, people that are new to the community may struggle to find us on IRC because they are looking under "op" not "om" and there are a lot of channels. Although we know what OM stands for, people stumbling across our channels might not until they go into them.

@johncave topics are here for explaining :) And for people searching "randomly", we still have the general #openmandriva chan which topic can explain where are specialized channels.

Is there a way to nickname the channel?
For example you find the channel openmandriva-xxx, then connect, and then on the left it shows up as om-xxx.

@waynesallee it's how it works, if you connect to #openmandriva-xxx, on the left, it shows #om-xxx, so in fact, we even do not need to advertise the new name :)

I don't see the point of this I don't experience name cutoff even on my phone IRC app. It would be different if we had to type the name into something on a regular basis but we don't. Leave things as they are, people who have name cutoff should probably find a better application for IRC.

Also when it's redirected a redirect statement can briefly state the reason for redirection such as something like " redirected from openmandriva-xxx to om-xxx to make the name on the left shorter"

In other words don't mention it on any of the openmandriva documents, but when they get redirected there can be a short bit of info telling them there.

@colinclose well my proposition is not really because I look for something to do, but as I was taking care of the new meetbot and the creation of the workshop irc chan, I thought intersting to find a solution to the superlong name at the same time.

@waynesallee @jclvanier oma is abbreviation for OpenMandriva Association and has logic behind it, where om - is just some kind of shortening
OMA we use in many places, as common already shortening for the organization

@benbullard OMA is easy to pronounce, as well we already use "OMA" a lot - people simply do that.
See your point and agree with it - but we and users would not think "OpenMandriva Association" or for deep reasons every time when writing channel or pronouncing, and natural way of shortening appears to be OMA (if you look at how people and we ourselves most often do that).

Kate: See your point as well. This is not a big issue with me so whatever happens will be OK here.
