Making effective use of public spaces, e.g. museums
New Zealand has many excellent public assets such as museums, observatories and aquariums that could be points of interest for connecting society more closely to science.
How should we make the most of them?

Te Papa is doing good things with their Science Live series and recently commissioned The KinShip to put on a show called The Seven Mysteries of the Sea. Cool idea, and was very fun, but I personally thought it pandered to a particular audience.

@kimberleycollins - can you expand your concerns? Interested in hearing more about the "particular audience"

On the topic of cool things in museums, there is currently an open call for papers for NDF http://www.ndf.org.nz/programme/ It's a great place to connect with lots of little local institutions. I was on parental leave last year, but I've been the couple of years before that.

The people doing it explained that Te Papa was trying to attract more of a "hipster" crowd and so it was very quirky. Good, though!

This was one of the biggest ideas that I took away from the recent SCANZ conference in Palmerston North.
