Free our logo

DN Daniel Nüst Public Seen by 327

The logo currently available as an eps file at https://eartharxiv.github.io/resources.html uses a font "Constantia" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantia_(typeface)) which is part of Microsoft/MS Office, so I do not have it on my Linux-based computer.

For the short term, I got a Windows computer, vectorized the font, and saved it as SVG so others can create high-resolution printouts with the logo: https://uni-muenster.sciebo.de/s/W6wv4LkfhxN0fcU

In the medium term, it would be great to update the logo with a free font.

Thanks, Daniel. Can I host a copy of your image at https://eartharxiv.github.io/resources.html? I'd like to offer it via the CC-BY license (with attribution to you) along side the current logo. If you'd like to create a new free font logo, I'd be happy to host it on the EarthArXiv website. Alternatively, I could reach out to Andrew Cross who created the original logo and see if he'd be willing to do it. I don't know enough myself to create a new logo.

I was planning to make a PR to that repo myself after seeing what the consensus is on an updated logo. As this might take some time, please go ahead uploading the SVG.

I think getting Andrew involved as the original author is a good idea.

Looking around at https://www.whatfontis.com/NMY_Constantia.similar there seem to be several similar fonts, but all only "free for personal use", which is not enough IMO. Therefore I checked Google Fonts, and the following ones could work, keeping the overall style:

https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Lora
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Fenix
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Crimson+Text

We could keep this thread open for suggestions for a couple of weeks and then we can have a vote if there is no clear consensus yet.

Also, when getting in touch with Andrew, maybe he could re-consider the license... wouldn't CC-BY require everyone to acknowledge him? The current EarthArXiv stickers would violate that license, right?

As long as EarthArXiv/OSF/Andrew are not planning on hiring lawyers to police license violations, the logo could just as well be licensed as CC-0. Just my 2 cents :-)

Thanks again Daniel. Good points regarding license violations. I will post your current version on the EarthArXiv Resources page and reach out to Andrew. As you mention, we can also leave this thread active for a few weeks to gather more input.

I just received a response from Andrew. He is open to creating a new logo with a font that is accessible on all platforms. I'll keep everyone posted on the new logo and when it becomes available.

Andy has supplied me with a set of new logos that should now be accessible on all systems. I have not had a chance to test them, but they are on the website should others want to take a look. Andy was kind enough to reproduce the main logo as well as create smaller versions in both color and black and white. There is a zip file available for download on the Resources page. He hasn't yet replied about updating the license to CC-0 so, at the moment, everything is still listed as CC-BY. @danielnust we also have your vectorized version of the logo available on the Resources page. Is it ok to list this as CC-0?

I don't think that is possible to list mine as CC-0, since I built my logo on a file licenses as CC-BY.

Thanks to Andy for the new logos!

I think it might be confusing to have three different types on the resource page though. Don't you think we can settle for one version?

I agree it could be confusing with three different types on the resource page. I'm happy to keep just one. Although, I have not been able to reach Andy since he submitted the updated logos. I think we'll have to keep the license as CC-BY until he confirms otherwise.
