User read receipts

Uptake: I have a suggestion for the increasing millennial acceptance. I have noticed that when using chat tools like hipchat that my students will read messages, but not respond or acknowledge messages. They are generationally challenged when it comes to social cues due to smartphones and facebook. When I ask them to acknowledge messages with an emoji just so the sender knows they have been “heard” the uptake of the tools increases significantly. If there is a way that you can automate the signal, i.e. “bob read this at 9am” I think that will help. If you give users a way they could react, i.e. “thumbs up” or “interesting” or “mulling” I think you will increase interaction and solidify the value of the tool.
I'm so enthused by option 1. I think it would:
- make Loomio feel more human & conncted, a little more like an in-person meeting, where you know whether people are listening or not
- gradually give people a sense of how the Loomio organism is working in their context
…and could be switched off per-group with a coordinator seeting if a buncha groups didn't like it
Hi
How would that work for e-mail notifications?
Some people may just read the received e-mail notifications.
E-mail read-receipts may just be switched off or not supported by e-mail clients.
As I understand it, unless one's email client is blocking images, Loomio notices when an email notification has been opened (so that it doesn't then show you the same message as unread within the web interface).
I can confirm that. If you're not blocking images (or using text rather than html email) in your email client, we can determine whether you've opened the emails or not.
I think people using text emails, or blocking images in gmail or whatnot, is a .1% of the userbase problem which we likely don't need to address here.
I see three potential avenues here, which aren't necessarily mutually exclusive:
Automatic read receipt
Similar to facebook messenger, it is possible for us to determine who has read what at what time, and display either a little set of avatars, or 'x people have seen this', etc. I'm a little hesitant about this one, because it changes people's behaviour when they 'know they're being watched', and there's a social pressure to respond when you know someone has seen you read the thing. Would be interesting to see how various Loomio communities react to such a thing, although to my taste it feels very mildly creepy.
Like everything!
This would allow users to 'like' votes, proposals, and discussions the same way they could like comments. It's a nice balance between easy-to-do and user-driven, so it's probably my preference at the moment.
Temperature check proposal
The bomb of the available options, for when you really need to know that everyone has acknowledged the thing. (Maybe you're using it as parental sign-off for a field trip, or pinging developers in your community that they shouldn't deploy today, or whatever.) We're talking a bit about different proposal types here
